Colts Lose To League Champions

March 29, 2022

Rangers 1 Bonnyrigg Rose 2

Rangers applauded champions Bonnyrigg Rose on to the pitch tonight in what was ultimately a disappointing night for the Ibrox youngsters. Ahead at half time after a comfortable first half saw a big change around after the break, with Bonnyrigg scoring twice and Rangers only really creating one clear chance near the end.

Rangers were first to threaten on nine minutes when Robbie Ure passed to Arron Lyall inside the left side of the box, the Rangers winger missed the ball with his first try, got a much better connection with his second swing and Dean Brett deflected the ball wide for a corner. On the twenty-five minute mark Robbie Fraser fed Arron Lyall on the left, he cut inside and his shot forced former Rangers keeper Mark Weir to stretch and tip the ball over.

Rangers took the lead ten minutes before the break, a ball over the Bonnyrigg defence saw Robbie Ure pressure Neil Martynuik who while trying to guide the ball back to Mark Weir inadvertently knocked the ball past the keeper for an own goal. The visitors had shown little in the way of an attacking force in the first half, and only a long range Bradley Barrett effort two minutes before half-time called Lewis Budinauckas into action with the Rangers keeper saving easily.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 Bonnyrigg Rose 0

The visitors were back on level terms from what looked like a rather soft penalty when the referee adjudged Dean Brett was fouled inside the box, Neil Martynuik converted to atone for his earlier own goal. Bonnyrigg then took the lead with just over a quarter hour remaining, in a crowded penalty box Sean Brown poking the ball past Lewis Budinauckas.

Rangers had a great chance to draw level with a minute remaining, Arron Lyall provided the pass to release Tony West inside the right side of the penalty area with Mark Weir advancing from his line to make a fine block.

Old Firm Stroll For Colts

March 19, 2022

Rangers 3 Celtic 0

Rangers Colts blew Celtic away in twenty three minutes in today’s Lowland League match at Ibrox establishing a three goal lead. The Ibrox youngsters could have added a few more and while Celtic may point to their lineup being a bit younger they never troubled Jay Hogarth in the Rangers goal over the ninety minutes.

There was less than twenty seconds on the clock when Rangers took the lead, Ross McCausland capitalised on Magnus Mackenzie’s slack pass back to break into the right side of the penalty area, cut inside a defender and shoot past Tobi Oluyameni. On five minutes Ross McCausland was in again when Alex Lowry released him with a pass inside Magnus Mackenzie, on this occasion his shot was deflected wide.

Rangers doubled their lead on the quarter hour mark, Charlie McCann passed to Alex Lowry who moved forward into Celtic’s half and when he got around twenty-five yards from goal he fired past the keeper. By the midway point of the half it was three, Robbie Fraser’s pass sending Tony Weston through one on one with the keeper who he beat with a calm finish.

Six minutes before the break another superb Alex Lowry pass picked put Adam Devine inside the right side of the box, he poked the ball past the keeper but the ball bounced off his right hand post. Rangers had a final chance before the break when Cole McKinnon fed Ross McCausland on the right and cut into the penalty area but his shot was weak and Tobi Oluyameni saved comfortably.

Half-Time:- Rangers 3 Celtic 0

Rangers had the first chance eight minutes after the break, Ross McCausland in possession on the right passed inside to Adam Devine who shot just wide of the keeper’s right hand post. Rangers continued to dominate possession but the second half was only really noted for a series of substitutions with neither keeper called into action.

Rangers had one final effort on goal with five minutes remaining with a Robbie Fraser strike from distance that Tobi Oluyameni saved without too much difficulty.

St.Mirren 6 Rangers 5

Earlier I took in Rangers U15’s clash with St.Mirren at their Ralston Training Centre, it was a high scoring game that the young Rangers side will be disappointed to lose. With a two goal lead at the break and the disappointment of a missed penalty, to missing a great chance right at the death for a sixth goal that would secured an incredible high scoring draw.

The home side attacked on the left in the opening minute and it took them deep into the left side of the Rangers penalty area with Colbi McQuarrie blocking the shot from a narrow angle. Rangers took the lead in the sixth minute, when the ball came in from the right it broke to Jose Calela and he beat the keeper with the aid of a deflection.

Five minutes later the sides were level, a through ball sent Saints through the inside left channel and the winger rounded the keeper and found the net via the inside of the far post. They came close again when Colbi McQuarrie’s pass out was intercepted the shot came off the outside of his right hand post.

Rangers were awarded a penalty midway through the half, a short corner was played on the left and the referee adjudged Flynn O’Brien’s cross was handled. Flynn O’Brien stepped up but his shot was weak and the keeper saved easily. Rangers came close two minutes later, Ronald Mynell picked up a loose ball and from fully twenty-five yards his shot was only just wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

Rangers created another chance when Sam McLachlan on the left passed to Jose Calela inside the box, the ball broke to Ronald Mynell who forced a save from the keeper at his near post. Rangers took the lead just after the half hour mark, Lucas Macauley’s cross from the left found Flynn O’Brien inside the box, when he tried to take on a defender the ball broke to Jose Calela who shot past the keeper.

Rangers added a superb third five minutes before the break, Lucas Macauley on the left passed inside to Alex Smith who danced past two defenders to the edge of the box and picked out Flynn O’Brien to his right and he shot across the keeper into the net.

Half-Time:- St. Mirren 1 Rangers 3

St.Mirren reduced the deficit early in the second half, the attack came through the inside right channel and when the ball was passed inside the ball was fired past the keeper. Rangers came close on fifty-five minutes, Oliver Goodbrand played the ball forward on the left and a neat touch from Jose Calela on the halfway line sent Murray Shaw racing clear, he continued into the left side of the box but was denied by the keeper.

The home side capitalised on that left off by drawing level within a minute, the attack took them to the left hand byline and when the ball was played across the six yard box it presented a simple finish. A ball over the Rangers defence gave Saints an opportunity breaking into the left side of the box but a brave save at the feet of the attacker from Sam Reid thwarted the danger.

With sixteen minutes remaining Rangers edged ahead with another superb goal, Matthew McIvor provided the pass through the inside right channel for Flynn O’Brien to lob the ball over the keeper as he came from his line. The lead barely lasted sixty seconds with Saints fourth being a carbon copy of their third, hit the left hand byline low ball across goal and a simple finish.

Within a couple of minutes the home side worked a short corner on the left and the shot from the left hand angle of the box went in off the inside of the far post to take the lead for the first time in the game. Their lead was extended from a superb twenty five yard free-kick just right of centre that gave the keeper no chance.

Rangers reduced the margin to one goal with five minutes remaining from a Murray Shaw solo effort, going past two defenders and into the left side of the box to shoot across the keeper and into the net. They really should have equalised with the game’s last attack, the ball was moved from Oliver Goodbrand on the left through Matthew McIvor to Olly Hynd on the right, his cross took out the keeper and Murray Shaw looked sure to score but headed just wide of the back post.

Full-Time:- St.Mirren 6 Rangers 5

Rangers Squad:- Colbi McQuarrie (Gk), Sam Reid (Gk), Jack Caldwell, Matthew McIvor, Lyle Hunter, Lucas Macauley, Sam McLachlan, Alex Smith, Aiden McCallion, Flynn O’Brien, Jose Calela, Ronald Mynell, Olly Hynd, Oliver Goodbrand, Ben Hutton, Murray Shaw.

15’s Edge Out Hearts

March 12, 2022

My original plan was to take in this morning’s U13’s (2010’s) nine-a-side game against Hearts then head to Dumbarton for the Lowland League clash with Dalbeattie Star. When the Lowland League game was cancelled it meant I could stay for the U15’s (2008’s) meeting with Hearts in the afternoon.

Rangers 3 Hearts 2

Rangers deserved their victory having the upper hand for most of the game although Hearts came back strongly, pining Rangers back for most of the last twenty minutes. Although Rangers had territorial advantage in the early stages neither keeper was troubled until Rangers took the lead on twenty-seven minutes. Zak Richford was fouled on the edge of the box and just right of centre. Lewis Marshall fired a shot past the wall and into the keeper’s top right hand corner.

Just under ten minutes later Rangers doubled their lead, another free-kick, this time wide on the right was played short by Sam McLachlan to Jack Caldwell which allowed him to hit the byline and from his cross Matthew McIvor volleyed into the net from close range. Rangers had another chance a couple of minutes later, a cross from the left found its way to Zac Richford at the back post but his effort was straight at the keeper.

Five minutes before the break Hearts reduced the deficit, from a free-kick from wide on the left their centre back rose to power a header past the keeper. Rangers should have restored their two goal advantage almost immediately, Zak Richford chased down a pass back to the keeper and when the ball broke to Jose Calela he looked sure to score but he shot against the keeper’s left hand post.

The same post came to Hearts rescue barely sixty seconds later, this time Sam McLachlan’s shot from just outside the box bouncing clear of the inside of the post. The visitor’s had the last attempt of the half, shooting narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.

Half-Time:- Rangers 2 Hearts 1

Rangers had an early chance after the break, Jayden Fitzpatrick chipped the ball forward to Sam McLachlan on the right and from his cross Oliver Goodbrand’s header forced the keeper to save diving to his left. The game was almost on the seventy minute mark Rangers Trialist goalkeeper had to stretch to tip over a shot from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes later another Hearts effort, this time from the left hand angle the box was only just over. Hearts were having their spell and when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and left of centre Rangers Trialist keeper dived to his right to turn the ball wide for a corner. When the corner came in the ball broke to a Hearts player around ten yards out but he shot narrowly wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

Rangers had been under a bit of pressure but created a couple of chances on the break to make the game safe. Trialist No. 10 broke down the right and into the penalty area only to be denied when the keeper blocked with his foot. Jayden Fitzpatrick then broke through the inside right channel before passing inside to Trialist No.3 who forced another save from the keeper.

The game was now in injury time and when a Hearts corner landed at the feet of Trialist No.3 he thumped it clear allowing Trialist No. 10 to outpace the lone defender and with the keeper advancing from his line, he sent the ball over the keeper from fully thirty-five yards and into the net. There was still time for one last Hearts attack which came down the left and when the ball was played across the box it was fired into the net at the back post.

Full-Time:- Rangers 3 Hearts 2

Rangers Squad:- Jayden Millarvie (Gk), Trialist No.21 (Gk), Jack Caldwell, Matthew McIvor, Lyle Hunter, Trialist No.3, Lewis Marshall, Aiden McCallion, Alex Smith, Zak Richford, Jose Calela, Trialist No.10, Sam McLachlan, Oliver Goodbrand, Jayden Fitzpatrick.

Footnote:- In the earlier nine-a-side game Rangers lost to an impressive Hearts side by 6-9 in a high scoring game. Rangers goalscorers were Charlie Greenlaw, Riley Bryson, Luca Rankin, Kyle Glasgow (2) & Daniel Owonyomi.

U18’s Win At The Orium

March 11, 2022

Hearts 0 Rangers 4

A dominant first half was the foundation for Rangers comfortable win over Hearts at The Orium tonight. With the young ‘Gers establishing a three goal lead at the break, there was no way back for Hearts.

Rangers took the lead on seven minutes when Mackenzie Strachan delivered a free-kick from wide on the left and Robbie Ure set a looping header back across goal and in at the keeper’s right hand post. The next chance came at the end of an neat passing move on the quarter hour mark, it ended with a Charlie Lindsay shot from inside the right side of the box that Liam McFarlane blocked with his legs.

There was a bit of a confusion around Rangers second goal on twenty-one minutes, a through ball sent Rory Wilson clear and despite a linesman’s flag he continued and put the ball into the net. After a brief consultation the referee over ruled his assistant and awarded the goal. Around the half hour mark Rory Wilson got a header in from a right hand corner which bounced off the keeper’s left hand post.

Just before the break Rangers grabbed a third from the penalty spot, at the end of a neat passing move the referee adjudged Robbie Ure was fouled inside the box with Darren McInally converting from the spot.

Half-Time:- Hearts 0 Rangers 3

Eleven minutes after the break Charlie Lindsay’s attempted chipped pass broke off a defender to Robbie Ure but his shot was just wide of Liam McFarlane’s right hand post. Just after the hour a ball into the Hearts penalty area found Rory Wilson at the back post but he was denied by Liam McFarlane who stuck out a foot to save and Crispin McLean’s effort from the rebound was blocked by a defender.

Hearts had shown little as an attacking force but with twelve minutes remaining an attack crafted on the right saw the ball moved across to Callum Hambrook inside the left side of the box but he shot straight at Jacob Pazikas. Rangers response was to add another goal four minutes later, Leyton Dunlop providing the pass for Zak McKay to go through and shoot past the keeper.

Colts Top Glasgow Cup Group

March 8, 2022

Rangers 2 Queens Park 0

A Tony Weston double saw Rangers complete their Glasgow Cup fixtures and finish top of the group. The goals came in the second half after the first half ended goalless thanks to a Jay Hogarth penalty save.

The visitors came close in the seventh minute, Jay Hogarth seemed to misjudge Ronan Darcy’s shot from the edge of the box but manged to divert the shot on to his right hand post, the rebound was fired against the crossbar from point blank range and when the third effort found the net it was flagged offside. Rangers then had an incredible miss a couple of minutes later, Alex Lowry and Robbie Fraser combined on the left and from the latter’s low cross Cedric Itten looked sure to score from a couple of yards out but failed to get a clean connection allowing Jacques Heraghty to save.

Just over a minute later Cedric Itten was in on goal on a through ball, he tried to round Jacques Heraghty who delayed his progress but the Rangers striker spun and got his shot away with Charlie Fox heading from the goal line. Midway through the half Scott Williamson broke forward to the edge of the box but his shot was comfortably saved by Jay Hogarth low to his right.

Rangers replied when a good passing moved ended with Charlie McCann picking out Cedric Itten inside the right side of the penalty area but he shot over. Just beyond the half hour mark Charlie McCann tried his luck from the edge of the box which Jacques Heraghty saved comfortably low to hi right.

Four minutes before the break Jai Quitongo skinned Mateusz Zukowski allowing a free run into the left side of the penalty area where he was brought down by Greig Allen. Ronan Darcy took the penalty with Jay Hogarth producing a fine save low to his right.

Half-Time:- Rangers 0 Queens Park 0

Rangers had the better of the opening quarter hour of the second half without troubling Jacques Hegarty but made the break through on sixty-five minutes. Arron Lyall’s pass released Cole McKinnon inside the right side of the box, Jacques Heraghty blocked the shot with his foot but Tony Weston was on hand to knock the rebound into the net.

Rangers double their lead six minutes later, Charlie McCann was tripped on the edge of the box and just left of centre, Alex Lowry’s shot deflected off the defensive wall into the path of Tony Weston who prodded the ball past the keeper. Rangers had a final chance to add to their tally when Ross McCausland broke into the left side of the box but shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Comfortable Win For U14’s (2009’s)

March 6, 2022

Rangers 5 Dundee United 1

Today’s football fix was the Under 14’s clash with Dundee United at The Rangers Training Centre, it was an 11-a-side game played on a slightly reduced pitch, with the goals on the six yard line and the pitch width reduced by a couple of yards on each side.

Rangers scored inside the opening minute, Dundee United lost possession outside their own box and Ben Hutton shot into the keeper’s top right hand corner. Rangers came close to adding to their tally on the quarter hour mark, Ashton Patton and Josh Carson combined on the right and when the cross came in Callum Young headed just wide of the far post.

A minute later Ewan Gray robbed a defender and broke into the right side of the box with the keeper coming from his line to make the block. With the final five minutes of the first period approaching Rangers doubled their lead, Josh Carson won the ball and when he played it into the penalty area it was missed by Callum Young but Luke Moore was on hand to shoot back across the keeper and into the net.

Rangers started the second period where they left off, on the front foot and when Ben Hutton shot from distance the United keeper fumbled but managed to prevent the ball crossing the line. The keeper was in action again saving to his left from Ewan Gray after he was released by an Ashton Patton pass.

Rangers scored a third ten minutes into the second period, Josh Carson provided the pass to send Max Cameron clear and he held off a defender before shooting past the keeper. Within in a minute Oliver Preston fed Josh Carson inside the right side of the box and he cut inside before shooting forcing the keeper to save diving to his right.

Halfway through the period an Oliver Preston free-kick saw the keeper dive high to his right to make the save. A couple of minutes later the visitor’s reduced the deficit, Rangers lost possession attempting to play out from the back and a fine strike gave the Rangers keeper no chance.

Ben Hutton then sent Ewan Gray racing clear with the United keeper saving bravely at the attacker’s feet. Rangers then added a fourth in the final minute of the period, Max Cameron broke down the right and when his centre deflected off a defender to Ewan Gray he shot high past the keeper. There was still time in the second period for the United keeper to be in action again, Pedro Chico in possession left of centre passed inside to Max Cameron who’s shot was saved by the keeper diving to his right.

Rangers added a fifth three minutes into the third period, Max Cameron breaking through between two defenders into the box to shoot past the keeper. Rangers next chance came when Oliver Goodbrand’s pass sent Max Cameron breaking into the left side of the box with the keeper saving bravely at the striker’s feet.

Rangers then came close twice in the same attack, Max Cameron’s shot beat the keeper but came back off the right hand post. Rangers won the loose ball and from Luke Moore’s shot the keeper dived  high to his right to save.

When Luke Moore went past a couple of defenders on the right hand byline his ball across goal reached Oliver Goodbrand who’s powerful strike was parried by the keeper. The final chance came when Ewan Gray, Callum Young and Josh Carson combined on the right with the keeper standing up to block the latter’s shot from a narrow angle.

U18’s Through To Youth Cup Final

March 5, 2022

Hibernian 2 Rangers 4

A dominant second half display at Hibs Training Centre saw Rangers U18’s come from behind to progress to a Youth Cup Final clash with Hearts. The home side would have approached the tie with confidence, having won both league encounters at the same venue.

Rangers got off to a poor start and in the first minute the home side were claiming a penalty for a hand ball against Connor Allan but the referee waved play on. Sixty seconds later Josh O’Connor broke into the right side of the penalty area and when he played the ball across the box Connor Young looked sure to score but a brilliant Jack McConnell save diverted the ball for a corner.

Hibernian took the lead from the penalty spot in the third minute, the referee adjudged the ball was handled inside the box when a cross came in from the right, Josh O’Connor converting the penalty despite a valiant effort from Jack McConnell. Rangers first chance came on eleven minutes when Jack Harkness hit the right hand byline but both Rory Wilson and Robbie Ure just couldn’t connect with his ball across the face of goal.

The sides were level on nineteen minutes a cross into the HIbs box from the left was cleared only as far as Charlie Lindsay and from just inside the left side of the penalty area he shot across Murray Johnson and into the bottom corner. Josh O’Connor then had a chance as he broke into the right side of Rangers penalty area but his shot was deflected into the side netting. Just before the half-hour mark Jacob Blaney’s free kick from wide left glanced off the head of a Rangers defender and went just wide of the far post. From the corner the ball broke to Jacob Blaney inside the box but a superb Robbie Ure block diverted the ball wide.

Hibernian took the lead eleven minutes before the break, Tyler Pasnik lost possession in midfield, Josh O’Connor stepped forward and his shot from around thirty yards found the net via Jack McConnell’s right hand post. Rangers responded and five minutes before the break Jack Harkness on the right passed to Rory Wilson who cut inside onto his left foot and shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Half-Time:- Hibernian 2 Rangers 1

Rangers came close early in the second half with Greig Allen heading narrowly wide of the far post from Leyton Dunlop’s corner from the right. A Robbie Ure chipped pass found Rory Wilson inside the left side of the Hibs penalty area but his shot was deflected wide of the near post.

Rangers were now dominating possession with Hibs content to hit on the break, Rangers were hoping for that clear chance and it came with sixteen minutes remaining. Mackenzie Strachan’s corner from the right was headed goalwards and James Graham was well placed to divert the ball past Murray Johnson from close range.

The momentum was now with Rangers and in the next attack Leyton Dunlop almost got on the end of Robbie Ure’s cross from the left as Murray Johnson scrambled the ball wide of his far post. Rangers took the lead for the first time in the match with nine minutes remaining, Kevin Ciubotaru passed to James Graham and from his cross from the left Robbie Ure headed past Murray Johnson.

Two minutes later Rangers extended their lead, Robbie Ure stooping to get his head on Mackenzie Strachan’s right hand corner and the ball looped into the net at the back post. Rangers saw out the game comfortably with a couple of corners from the home side being the best they could muster.

Colts Hit Clyde For Nine

March 1, 2022

Rangers 9 Clyde 0

Rangers Colts blew a Clyde side away in tonight’s Glasgow cup tie at Rangers Training Centre. It may not have been close to a full strength Clyde side but the young Rangers side were relentless in their pursuit of goals.

Rangers took the lead on six minutes, some great play from Arron Lyall as he attacked the box saw him play through Tony Weston inside the left side of the penalty area and shot across the keeper into the net. Rangers continued to dominate possession and territorially but there was thirty five minutes on the clock when Ross McCausland cut inside a defender and shot at the keeper from the edge of the box.

A couple of minutes later Rangers doubled their lead, Tony Weston raced clear, the Trialist keeper saved his shot but Ross McCausland followed up to net the rebound. On the stroke of half-time Rangers grabbed a third from the penalty spot. When the ball was played forward a slip by a Clyde defender allowed Ross McCausland race clear, the trialist keeper blocked his shot with a foot and forced him wide. He passed inside to Tony Weston who was brought down inside the box with Cole McKinnon stepping up to convert the penalty.

Half-Time:- Rangers 3 Clyde 0

Rangers added to their tally eight minutes into the second half, Kane Ritchie-Hosler intercepted a pass and hit the right hand byline from where he played the ball across goal for Arron Lyall to net. Only another four minutes had passed when Rangers scored again, from Adam Devine’s cross from the right saw Tony Weston rise to head the ball back across the keeper and into the net.

The goals kept coming and there was sixty-three minutes on the clock when Robbie Fraser advanced on the left, his cross was dummied by Kane Ritchie-Hosler allowing Cole McKinnon to slam the ball into the net from around the penalty spot.

With twelve minutes remaining Rangers scored a seventh, Charlie Lindsay in possession on the left hand angle of the box passing inside to Darren McInally to beat the keeper from the edge of the box. Two minutes later Adam Devine hit the right hand byline, Charlie Lindsay looked certain to score from his ball across goal but was denied by a superb point blank save from the keeper.

The respite didn’t last long with Rangers adding a further two goals in the final three minutes. First up Charlie Lindsay got the better of the keeper on an one on one when he was played through. It was Charlie Lindsay again who completed the scoring, exchanging passes with Robbie Fraser on the left side of the box before beating the keeper from a narrow angle.
