October 31, 2023

Rangers 4 Queens Park 0

Rangers B opened their Glasgow Cup campaign with a comfortable win over what was essentially a Queens Park B team at The Rangers Training Centre this afternoon.

The visitors started the game brightly without really threatening Mason Munn’s goal and the first real chance came at the other end just before the quarter hour mark. Cole McKinnon in possession on the right passed inside to Archie Stevens who moved the ball on to Aaron Lyall, he cut back on to his right foot but was denied by a fine save from Sam Kane. Within a minute Cammy Bruce broke on the left before passing inside to Aaron Healy who’s shot was diverted over by Johnly Yfeko’s block.

The half had just passed the twenty-five minute mark when Lucas McCormick outpaced Zander Hutton to a long ball on the left into the box but shot straight at Mason Munn. Rangers were forced into a change on thirty four minutes Josh Gentles replacing Archie Stevens and within sixty seconds the sixteen year old had given Rangers the lead. Paul Nsio on the right hand byline laid the ball back for Cole McKinnon to cross and Josh Gentles glanced a header past the keeper.

Five minutes before the break Bailey Rice switched play to Zander Hutton on the right, he passed inside to Paul Nsio who moved the ball on to Bailey Rice and his left foot shot bounced back off the keeper’s right hand post. On the stroke of half-time Bailey Rice fired in a free-kick on the edge of the box and right of centre which Sam Kane saved at his left hand post.

Half-Time:- Rangers 4 Queens Park 0

In the opening minute of the second half James Graham tried his luck from around twenty-five yards that Sam Kane saved comfortably. Five minutes later Queens looked sure to draw level, Alex Fairlie raced clear into the right side of Rangers box and squared to the unmarked Lucas McCormick but shot wide of Mason Munn’s left hand post.

On fifty-seven minutes Arron Lyall pinched possession from keeper Sam Kane inside the penalty area and the ball broke to James Graham but his effort went weakly across goal. Rangers doubled their lead just after the hour mark, Arron Lyall intercepted an attempted pass out from Sam Kane, the keeper redeemed himself saving at the attacker’s feet but James Graham pounced on the loose ball to tee up Bailey Rice who netted from just inside the box.

Rangers increased their lead a couple of minutes later, Paul Nsio on the right side of the box passed inside to James Graham who dribbled into the box and beat the keeper with a cool finish. A good Rangers passing moved ended with Paul Nsio on the left hand byline, his centre deflected to Arron Lyall who was denied by a Sam Kane diving to his left.

The  next chance came when Darren McInally went past a defender and deep into the right side of the box but Sam Kane managed to divert his shot wide of the far post. With two minutes remaining Zander Hutton controlled Bailey Rice’s switch of play to tee up Tyler Pasnik who beat Sam Kane from the edge of the box to complete the scoring.

The final chance came at the other end, Joe Smith sent Rocco Hickey-Fugaccia to the right hand byline and his ball across the face of goal just evaded the in rushing Ross McLean.

Rangers 3 St Johnstone 4

Got home from Prague in time to take in Rangers Under 18’s friendly against St Johnstone on Friday night. With seven players away on International duty and another seven playing on Wednesday’s B Team game against Hearts it was an unusual lineup with five Under 16’s making an appearance.

The first real attack came on eight minutes when St Johnstone broke into the left side of the box they appeared to have a valid penalty claim turned down. Rangers took the lead on the quarter hour mark, Josh Gentles hit the left hand byline where he cut the ball back for Lyle Wark to shoot pat the keeper.

The sides were level ten minutes later when St Johnstone broke into the right side of the box and the ball was played a across goal and converted at the back post. The visitors took the lead three minutes later, an attack and cross from the right which was headed in at the back post.

Nine minutes before the break the ball was switched to Lewis Stewart on the right, he played the ball across the box to Lyle Wark who was denied by the keeper at point blank range. In the next attack Josh Gentles in possession on the right passed inside to Lyle Wark he played in Lewis Stewart who shot straight at the keeper.

St Johnstone extended their lead three minutes before the break, an attack took them to the left hand byline and when the ball was played across goal it was converted at close range. They came close to a fourth when a curling shot from the left hand angle of the box was only just wide of the far post.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 St Johnstone 3

Ten minutes into the second half Rangers had a free-kick around twenty-five yards out on the right side of the box that Josh Gentles hit straight at the keeper. A minute later at the other end Grant Leitch’s block deflected a shot from the edge of the box over the bar.

Rangers pulled a goal back just before the hour mark. Kieron Willox attacked on the right and his shot come cross sailed over the head of the keeper and dropped in to the net at the far post. Two minutes later Harry Weir danced past to defenders on the left hand byline and picked out Lewis Stewart at the back post but he shot over.

With the game entering the final quarter hour St Johnstone restored the two goal margin, It was created on the left and when the ball was passed inside the shot beat Greig Thackray with the aide of a deflection.  Rangers should have scored when Harry Weir’s cross from the right picked out Josh Gentles but his header was too straight and the keeper made the save.

With eight minutes remaining Josh Gentles teed up Jose Calela with the keeper diverting his shot over with an outstretched foot. St Johnstone were still a threat and Greig Thackray saved at his near post when they attacked into the right side of the penalty area.

With two minutes remaining Findlay Curtis played the ball forward to Harry Weir on the right side of the box where he went past a defender and slotted past the keeper. Rangers came close to levelling when Kieron Willox passed to Findlay Curtis who’s twenty-five yarder beat the keeper but came back of the crossbar.

Rangers 0 Livingston 3

On Sunday afternoon Rangers Under 15’s took on what I believe was Livingston’s Under 16’s and with Rangers including three Under 14’s it was a big physical challenge.

Rangers had the first chance when Kyle Rodger broke forward on the right and played a one-two with Kyle Glasgow to take him inside the box but was denied by a save from the keeper at the near post. Livingston took the lead from the penalty spot just before the half hour, their attacker was yards offside when he broke down the right and when he passed inside the striker was brought down inside the box and the penalty was converted

The visitors soon had another chance from inside the left side of the box but the shot was straight at Jaden Millarvie. On the stroke of half-time Max Cameron broke down the right and passed inside to Ben Hutton but his mishit shot was comfortably saved.

Half-Time:- Rangers 0 Livingston 1

Rangers had an early chance when Max Cameron cut inside before shooting narrowly over. At the other end Livingston won the ball deep inside Rangers box, but after stepping inside a defender the striker shot wide of the far post.

Just before the hour mark there was a chance at each end, the visitors shot from around twenty-five yards which Sam Reid saved. Kyle Glasgow’s shot at the other end was gathered at the second attempt by the keeper.

Livingston the hit Rangers with two goals in the final eight minutes, a ball into Rangers box from the left was converted at close range. A pass through the inside left channel then sent their attacker through to continue into the box and shoot past Sam Reid.

Rangers Squad:- Jaden Millarvie (Gk), Sam Reid (Gk), Kyle Rodger, Connor Owen, Lewis Smith, Callum Young, Olly Preston, Ben Hutton, Aidan Crilly, Kyle Glasgow, Max Cameron, Ewan Gray, Callum Stewart, Coben Ferguson, Luca Rankin, Ashton Patton.

Footnote:- On Sunday morning I took in tow the Under 13’s  nine-a-side games against St Mirren as I try to get to know this group before they move to eleven-a-side. The two games I watched finished 0-0 and a 2-0 win for Rangers. Rangers won 2-1 in both the other games.

Colts Lose To Breidablik

October 22, 2023

Rangers 2 Breidablik 3

A stronger than normal Rangers B side lost to Icelandic Europa Conference League side Breidablik at The Rangers Training Centre this afternoon. With the Icelandic League finished Breidablik need to keep playing and today’s game was preparation for their tie against Genk in Belgium on Thursday.

Only a brilliant save prevented Rangers taking the lead in the fifth minute, the play was switched from the left to Ross McCausland inside the right side of the box, he cut inside a defender and his net bound shot was tipped on to the crossbar by Anton Ari Einarsson. Arron Lyall’s follow up from the rebound was deflected wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

Three minutes later the visitors took the lead, David Ingvarsson drove the ball across the penalty area from the left and Jason Dadi Svanporsson converted at the back post. With the twenty-five minute mark approaching Gisli Eyjolfsson crossed from the left with Jason Dadi Svanporsson heading just over.

Rangers were level a couple of minutes beyond the half hour, Bailey Rice picked out Ross McCausland inside the right side of the box, his superb first touch set him up to beat the keeper with a cool dinked finish. Parity barely lasted five minutes, Viktor Karl Einarsson got to the right hand byline and cut the ball back for Klaermint Olsen to shoot past Robbie McCrorie.

On the stroke of half-time Adam Devine was caught out by a long ball allowing David Ingvarsson to break on the left, his centre picked out Jason Dadi Svanporsson who’s shot came back off Robbie McCrorie’s right hand post, but Gisli Eyjolfsson was on hand to net the rebound.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 Breidablik 3

In the opening minute of the second half substitute keeper Brynjar Atli Bragason denied Archie Stevens with a brilliant point blank save. Goalmouth action for the remainder of the half was at a premium and was only really noted for a plethora of substitutions by both sides.

With two minutes remaining Rangers scored their second goal, Connor Allan volleying Arron Lyall’s corner from the right through a crowded penalty area and into the net.

Rangers 3 Celtic 3

In the morning, also at The Rangers Training Centre, Rangers Under 14’s shared six goals with their Celtic counterparts in an entertaining game.

Rangers had a couple of early efforts that didn’t trouble the goal keeper, similar efforts followed at the other end before Celtic took the lead on thirteen minutes, a ball over Rangers defence released the attacker, the initial shot came back of the keeper’s right hand post but the rebound was converted.

With the period entering the final ten minutes Rangers equalised from the penalty spot, Coben Ferguson broke into the right side of the box where he was bundled over and Luca Rankin converted from the spot. Rangers took the lead four minutes later, Ethan Molloy passed to Coben Ferguson on the edge of the box where he side stepped a defender before shooting past the keeper.

The sides were level again two minutes later, following a corner the ball went back out to the right, the cross flicked off a defender and looped to the back post where it was volleyed into the net. Celtic then had a one on one early in the second period with Carter McEwan coming from his line to produce a fine save.

Rangers took the lead ten minutes later, Luca Rankin’s pass split the Celtic defence and found Riley Bryson on the left hand angle of the box, he passed inside to Coben Ferguson who’s shot was deflected towards the back post where Luca Rankin netted at close range. 18’s Equal Record

October 15, 2023

Rangers 13 St Andrews United 0

Rangers Under 18’s equalled their record margin of victory in a Youth Cup tie with a 13-0 win over St Andrews United at The Rangers Training Centre this afternoon. The previous 13-0 win came against Deveronvale on 7th November 2010, also at The Training Centre. Max Wright and Kal Naismith led the scoring that day with four goals.

Today was a total mismatch with Alfie Halliwell a virtual spectator for the ninety minutes, rather than a match report I’ll just cover the thirteen goals.

18 Mins – Blaine McClure played the ball into the box from the left and Chris Eadie’s neat flick releases Callum Burnside inside the left side of the box and he shot across the keeper into the net.

22 Mins – Chris Eadie’s glancing header from Blaine McClure’s cross from the left finds the net via the inside of the far post..

37 Mins – A good passing move took Rangers through the centre of the St Andrews defence and ended with a Calum Adamson pass to Josh Gentles who shot past the keeper.

39 Mins – Cammy Bell with a through ball is the provider for Rangers fourth and Chris Eadie’s second goal.

43 Mins – From a chipped pass into the box from the left  Josh Gentles showed a great piece of skill to control the ball and shoot past the keeper.

Half-Time:- Rangers 5 St Andrews United 0

46 Mins – Rangers sixth goal came from the penalty spot, Lewis Stewart was brought down inside the left side of the St Andrews penalty area and Blaine McClure converted from the spot.

59 Mins – Zander Hutton in possession on the right passed inside to Lyle Wark who’s shot from the edge of the box went in off the keeper’s left hand post.

72 Mins – Blaine McClure’s cross from the left found its way to Zander Hutton at the back post, he knocked the ball across goal providing Lewis Stewart with a simple close range finish.

77 Mins – Alex Smith exchanges passes with Kieron Willox to break into the right side of the box where he rounded the keeper before rolling the ball into the net.

82 Mins – Cammy Scott on the left passed to Lewis Stewart on the angle of the box and he curled a superb shot into the far top corner.

83 Mins – Kieron Willox notches Rangers eleventh when he was played through into right side of the box to shoot past the keeper.

87 Mins – An attempted clearance goes backwards instead of forwards and lands at the feet of Lewis Stewart who completes his hat-trick from close range.

89 Mins – The scoring was completed when Lewis Stewart sent Cammy Scott into the left side of the box, his shot looked sure to be saved but seemed to go straight through the keeper.

Rangers 1 Celtic 0

Earlier in the day Rangers Under 16’s recorded a deserved 1-0 win over Celtic.

The first real chance of the game came from Cammy Fernie’s shot from the edge of the box and left of centre that saw Cammy Patterson dive to his left to parry. Rangers took the lead on thirty four minutes, Cammy Patterson’s attempted pass out went straight to Jose Calela and despite a valiant attempt diving low to his right he couldn’t prevent the shot finding the net.

Celtic’s response saw Sam Sedwell break forward to the left side of Rangers box, the ball across the box found Calvin Keenan but a superb Thomas Falconer block cleared the danger. Rangers immediately broke to the other end and Jose Calela came close with a shot from the edge of the box just wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

Jose Calela threatened again and on this occasion a deflection off a defender took the ball wide of the keeper’s left hand post. Celtic had their best chance of the half five minutes before the break, Jacob Donnelly broke on the left and exchanged passes with Sam Sedwell on the angle of the box before shooting just wide of the far post.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 Celtic 0

Celtic had a chance seven minutes after the break with an attack to the left hand byline, Calvin Keenan was picked out from the cutback but he shot high over. At the other end Olly Goodbrand burst past a defender into box with Cammy Patterson saving diving to his right.

Within sixty seconds Cammy Fernie was shooting straight at the keeper from the edge of the box. Calvin Keenan then charged down a Duncan Barlow clearance to break into the right side of the box with his shot deflecting wide of the far post.

Rangers really should have doubled their lead just beyond the hour, Alex Smith and Ronald Nimyel combined to send Olly Goodbrand through on goal but he blazed over from a good position. Rangers finished with a couple of efforts in the last few minutes. Ronald Nimyel teed up Grant Leitch who shot straight at the keeper from the edge of the box. Rangers 1 Monaco 3

Rangers Colts went down to Monaco in the latest in a series of friendlies this afternoon, it was a closer game that the scoreline suggests and Rangers will be disappointed in how they defended for a couple of goals.

Monaco had the first real chance in the second minute when Malamine Efekele broke into the left side of the box where he was denied by Mason Munn saving with an outstretched foot. Straight to the other end and Robbie Fraser’s cross from the left was flicked by Paul Nsio and was only just wide of the far post.

Rangers came close on seven minutes when Jules Bery left his pass back a bit short and Rangers Trialist No 7 was on to it but keeper Yan Lienard managed to divert the ball over with an outstretched foot. Monaco took the lead on the quarter hour mark when Arron Lyall was dispossessed  close to his own box, Lucas Michal entered the left side of the box and his shot struck the near post with Malamine Efekele on hand to shoot past Mason Munn.

Monaco’s lead was doubled two minutes later Lucas Michal advancing into the left side of the box and shooting across Mason Munn and into the far corner. Rangers responded with a corner from the right that was headed back across goal where it broke to Leon King who volleyed goalwards but Yari Lienard saved.

A couple of minutes shy of the half hour Archie Stevens sent Adam Devine to the right hand byline and his low cross into the six yard box was kicked clear by the keeper. Almost immediately Monaco increased their lead, Arron Lyall was dispossessed in a similar position to the first goal allowing Lucas Michal to attack on the left, from his cross Mason Munn produced a brilliant save to divert Malamine Efekele’s header on to his right hand post but the striker fired the rebound into the net.

From an Arron Lyall free-kick on the right Leon King headed back across goal but a stretching Greig Allen couldn’t get enough of a touch on the ball to convert. Rangers got on the scoresheet ten minutes before the break, Trialist No 7 played the ball out to Robbie Fraser on the left and his ball picked out Paul Nsio who shot past the keeper.

14’s Hit Killie For Six

October 1, 2023

Rangers 6 Kilmarnock 1

Sunday’s football fix was this morning’s Under 14 clash between Rangers and Kilmarnock and it was a game which Rangers won pretty comfortably.

Rangers took the lead in the opening minute, Coben Ferguson attacked the left side of the box and after a couple of ricochet’s inside the penalty area the ball broke to Riley Bryson who shot past the keeper. On eight minutes Luca Rankin broke forward  and released Daniel Owonyomi inside the box to his right with the keeper saving at his near post.

A minute later Rangers doubled their lead, Ty O’Connor broke forward and went past two defenders before slipping a pass through to Riley Bryson who shot past the keeper. Killie than had their first effort on goal from a free kick on the edge of the box and left of centre which was just too high.

Daniel Owonyomi challenged for the ball which broke to Luke Moore who shot straight at the keeper. At the other end the visitors had a chance from a right wing cross but the ball was headed over. Another Killie chance quickly followed, a pass in from the right setup a shooting chance that was deflected wide of Carter McEwan’s left hand post.

Rangers then increased their lead in the final minute of the first period, the visitors were struggling to clear from a Rangers attack and when Daniel Owonyomi’s shot deflected into the path of Luca Rankin he shot past the keeper. In the opening minute of the second period Coben Ferguson cut in from the left before shooting just wide of the far post.

Kilmarnock then broke into the left side of Rangers box with Carter McEwan standing up to save the shot. Rangers then grabbed a fourth, Riley Bryson cut in from the left and went past two defenders to tee up Luca Rankin whose shot found the net despite the best efforts from the Killie keeper.

With the period inside the final ten minutes Riley Bryson and Coben Ferguson combined on the left, the latter’s ball to the back post found Arran MacMillan who was denied by a close range save from the keeper. Killie finished the period with two chances, a shot from distance that was straight at Carter McEwan. In the next Kilmarnock attack on the left when the ball was passed inside the shot came back off the crossbar.

The visitors got on the scoresheet three minutes into the final period, the ball was passed in from the right and the shot found the bottom left hand corner of the net. Just before the period turn around a free-kick from the left hand angle of the box was headed goal wards with Carter McEwan pushing the ball on to the bar.

Rangers extended their lead immediately after the turn around, when the ball was cleared from the Killie box it landed at the feet of Ashton Scally who side stepped a defender and shot for goal, the keeper got down to his left to parry but Findlay Young was on hand to net the rebound. Killie tried to respond immediately with an attack on the right and a shot just wide of the far post.

When Daniel Owonyomi crossed from the right a good touch from Coben Ferguson took him clear of a defender but the keeper denied him with an outstretched foot. The final goal came just before the final whistle, the ball was moved from left to Ty O’Connor on the right hand angle of the box, he went past a defender before shooting into the far top corner of the net.
