Cambuslang Rangers 1 Rangers 3

With all that’s went on in recent weeks it was a great relief to get back to football today when a young Rangers side visited Somervell Park for the Garry Lynch Memorial Challenge this afternoon.

It was the Ibrox youngsters that threatened first, a good first touch on the halfway line from Fraser Aird allowed him to send Ryan Sinnamon overlapping down the right, from the full-back’s cross Callum Gallagher headed just wide of the keeper’s left hand post. The home side replied when the ball was played into the box from close to the byline of the right and was knocked goalwards and was just wide of Blair Currie’s left hand post.

As the quarter-hour approached Andy Mitchell tested the keeper from a free kick just outside the box, with the keeper diving to his left to parry. Ten minutes later a stunning save from the home keeper kept the score sheet blank. Fraser Aird progressed down the right and when Callum Gallagher rose to meet his cross a goal looked certain with the home keeper producing a stunning save at point-blank range from the striker’s header.

Half-Time Cambuslang Rangers 0 Rangers 0

A few minutes after the break the home side had a great chance to take the lead, Greg Pascazio misjudged the bounce of a through ball and the home striker was through on Liam Kelly, the substitute keeper made a fine save diving to his left. Rangers replied almost immediately with Luca Gasparotto rising to head Fraser Aird’s corner from the left just wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

The same combination came closer still with an identical set play, this time Luca Gasparotto’s header bounced off the crossbar and over. The young Gers took the lead just after the hour, from a free-kick on the left hand side of the box Andy Mitchell fired over the wall and into the top corner of the net.

Rangers increased their lead ten minutes later, Gregor Fotheringham’s superb challenge won possession inside the ‘Lang half before passing to Matty Clarke, the Ulsterman side-stepped a defender before firing past the keeper from just inside the box. A couple of minutes later Rangers grabbed a third, there seemed little danger when the ball was played into the Cambuslang box but the keeper failed to gather and Andy Mitchell won possession before guiding the ball away from the keeper and passing into the unguarded net.

With just over ten minutes remaining the home side grabbed a consolation goal, a long throw from the left gave the Rangers defence some problems and when they failed to clear the ball broke to a Cambuslang player inside the box and he shot past Liam Kelly. The home side almost scored again, a free-kick from the right was headed back across goal and then headed towards goal where Liam Kelly had to be alert to turn the ball wide of his right hand post.
