Brian Cameron Testimonial

Elgin City 0 Rangers 4

Rangers sent a B Team squad to play in Brian “Soapy” Cameron’s testimonial last night, Brian came through the Elgin City academy and has made 473 appearances, scoring 84 goals for the Boroughbriggs club. After a goalless first half the Rangers youngsters took command after the break scoring four goals and running out comfortable winners.

The first chance came for Rangers in the ninth minute, a ball over the Elgin defence released Tony Weston inside the right side of the penalty area but screwed his shot wide of the near post. On the quarter hour mark Charlie Lindsay’s corner from the left found Lewis MacKinnon beyond the far post and his header struck keeper Stevie Dunn on the face before going wide.

Darren McInally’s pass inside right-back Matthew Cooper picked out Josh McPake who went past a defender on the left hand byline and his shot from a tight angle came off the face of the bar. Seven minutes before the break Charlie Lindsay’s audacious effort from just inside Elgin’s half beat Thomas McHale and hit the top of the bar on the way over.

The home side them missed a great chance to take the lead, Kane Hester on the right hand angle of the penalty area picked out Craig Gunn on the edge of the six yard box but he shot wide of the near post. Another chance followed within sixty seconds, Brian Cameron’s ball over the Rangers defence released Craig Gunn, he broke into the left side of the penalty area where he cut inside Lewis MacKinnon but his shot was weak and Lewis Budinauckas saved comfortably.

Rangers had the last chance of the half when Darren McInally broke into the left side of the box where the ball broke for Charlie Lindsay who shot wide of the near post.

Barely a minute of the second half elapsed when only a fine Jay Hogarth save prevented Elgin taking the lead, Kane Hester in possession deep inside the right side of Rangers penalty area played the ball across the six yard box where Craig Gunn was denied by a point blank save by the Rangers keeper. Rangers capitalised on the save by taking the lead, it looked like a clear penalty when Tony Weston was taken down inside the box but the referee took it back and awarded a free-kick on the left angle. Josh McPake stepped up and his strike found the net via the inside of the near post.

Within a minute Elgin again came close at the other end, Kane Hester broke into the left side of Rangers penalty area, from his ball across goal Craig Gunn stretching could only knock the ball wide of the far post. Rangers doubled their lead on fifty-five minutes, Josh McPake attacked the centre of the Elgin defence before passing to Ross McCausland inside the left side of the box and he shot across Thomas McHale and into the net.

Rangers added a third with just under twenty minutes remaining, Tony Weston capitalising on a poor Jevan Anderson touch inside his own penalty area to shoot past the keeper. A few minutes later a fine turn and shot from James Graham brought out a save from Thomas McHale low to his right. The last action of the night saw Rangers add a fourth, James Graham rounding the keeper and rolling the ball into the net.
