2005’s Bounce Back

Rangers 2005’s bounced back from last week’s disappointment against Ayr United with a fine win over a physically bigger and stronger Motherwell side at the Hummel Training Centre this afternoon. All square at the break three fine goals saw the Rangers youngsters record a comfortable win.

Yet it was the visitor’s that took an early lead on four minutes. A corner from the left went beyond the penalty area and when the ball was crossed from the right it was headed past Scott Cowie at the back post. Rangers came close to an equaliser on thirteen minutes when Ricco Diack’s through ball released Callum Sandilands inside the right side of the penalty area but the keeper dived to turn the shot wide of the near post.

On the quarter hour Motherwell won the ball inside the left side of Rangers box and Scott Cowie was forced into a save at the near post. Midway through the half Jamie Newton swung a free-kick from the left into the box, the referee saw an infringement that nobody else did and pointed to the spot, with Adam Forrester stepping up to convert.

Ten minutes before the break Scott Cowie came to Rangers rescue with a brilliant point blank save. The attack started on the right and when the ball was passed inside a neat piece of skill took the ‘Well player clear of the Rangers defender but Scott Cowie made a superb block on the edge of the six yard box at point blank range.

Motherwell came close to edging ahead a couple of minutes into the second half, the shot from the edge of the box beat Scott Cowie but crashed off the under side of the bar. Rangers then hit Motherwell with two goals a minute either side of the hour mark. The first came from a fine passing move that was concluded by the two Under 14’s players, Kerr Robertson provide the pass for Rory Wilson who continued into the left side of the box and calmly beat the keeper. Next was a brilliant Zak McKay solo effort, breaking forward from right back, when the spaced opened up he left the Motherwell defence in his wake to continue into the box and slot past the keeper.

With the game entering the final quarter hour Callum Sandilands played a ball over the Motherwell defence, a good first touch from Rory Wilson set him up for the shot but it was straight at the keeper. Rangers scored a fourth with a couple of minutes remaining, Jamie Newton exchanged passes with Ryan Murray then sent Rory Wilson clear with his next pass and the striker continued into the box before passing the ball past the keeper and into the net at his left hand post.
