Last Minute Penalty Floors 2006’s

Rangers 2 Ross County 3

A last minute penalty condemned Rangers 2006’s to defeat against Ross County’s 2005’s at The Hummel Training Centre this afternoon. It was harsh on the young Rangers side against an older, bigger and physically stronger opponent.

Rangers had an early chance when Kerr Robertson played the ball into the right side of the box, it broke to Crispin McLean whose shot was turned wide of the near post by the keeper. Rangers took the lead on twenty minutes, a good passing moved was concluded when Kerr Robertson’s chipped pass into the left side of the penalty was chested by Elliott Dunlop into the path of Rory Wilson, he first effort was saved but he slammed the rebound into the net.

Rangers lead lasted seven minutes, they failed to clear a corner from the right and the ball fell to the Ross County centre back inside the six yard box and he fired into the net. Rangers had a chance just before the break when Elliott Dunlop’s through ball played in Rory Wilson on the left side of the box and he shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Ross County had two glorious chances early in the second half, on both occasions they were deep inside Rangers penalty area but failed to trouble the keeper on either occasion. Rangers were back in front just before the hour mark, Finlay Curtis broke from inside his own half, he passed to Ethan Sutherland to his left and he shot over the keeper from around twenty-five yards.

Five minutes later Finlay Curtis passed to Ethan Sutherland whose through ball sent Rory Wilson clear, he continued into the right side of the box but the keeper got down to touch the ball wide of the far post. With the game inside the final quarter hour Ross County attacked on the right, when the ball was crossed to the back post the referee saw a push and pointed to the spot and the penalty was converted.

Rangers seemed certain to go back in front when Rory Wilson went through the inside right channel, his shot looked net bound until the keeper dived high to his left to turn the ball wide. With five minutes remaining only a brilliant Sam Kane save kept the sides level. The attack came on the right and the cross to the back post was volleyed goalwards but the Rangers keeper got down to his right to make a brilliant save.
