U14’s Share Six Goals With Kilmarnock

 Rangers 3 Kilmarnock 3

Rangers and Kilmarnock Under 14’s shared six goals in an entertaining game at The Hummel Training Centre this morning, with Billy Gilmour and family in attendance watching younger brother Harvey in the Kilmarnock side. A poor refereeing decision st the start of the third period probably cost Rangers victory then an equally poor decision definitely saved them from defeat in the final minute.

Rangers had an early chance when Zak McKay’s run from the halfway line took him past two defenders before he passed to Timan Scott on the left hand angle of the box, he cut inside but was denied when the keeper dived high to his left to push his shot away. Almost immediately Kilmarnock took the lead, the attack released their player inside the right side of the box and his shot went in off the far post.

Five minutes later from a similar attack Kilmarnock came close to doubling their lead but this time the ball came back of the post. Rangers responded by drawing level, Jamie Newton intercepted a poor pass out from the keeper, went past a defender and into the box before slotting past the keeper.

Rangers had a great chance to take the lead on nineteen minutes Jamie Newton combined with Elliot Dunlop whose ball over the defence released Ricco Diack who was brought down for a clear penalty, he stepped up to take the kick but shot over. Rangers took the lead just before the end of the first period, Killie failed to clear a corner from the right and when the ball broke to Christian Webster he fired into the net.

Rangers were first to threaten in the second period, Euan Ross passing to Elliot Dunlop on the right hand angle of the box, he took on a defender before shooting just wide of the far post. Just after the period’s ten minute mark Scott Cowie had to be alert to race from his penalty area to clear a through ball before the Killie striker could pounce.

Rangers increased their lead with a couple of minutes of the period remaining, a good passing move involving Callum Sandilands, Jamie Newton and Kian Gunn ended with Jamie Newton shooting high past the keeper from the edge of the box. There was still time for Rangers to mount another attack, through Zak Queen and  Jamie Newton to send Elliot Dunlop to the right hand byline and from his cutback Ricco Diack was denied by a point-blank save.

Six minute into the final period a solo run took Elliot Dunlop past three defenders and into the box but he shot straight at the keeper. A minute later the game changed on a poor refereeing decision, A Kilmarnock attack was halted by a Christian Webster foul just outside the left side of the box, but the referee pointed to the spot and showed the Rangers defender a straight red card, the penalty was duly converted.

The sides were level a couple of minutes later when a powerfully struck free-kick from the edge of the box slipped through the hands of the Trialist keeper and into the net. Rangers responded and when a corner from the right broke to Adam Forrester his hooked shot came back off the keeper’s right hand post.

With two minutes remaining Rangers had a great chance to win it, Jamie Newton’s ball over the defence sent Zak McKay racing clear, he continued into the penalty area but shot straight at the keeper, In the final minute Killie broke into the right side of Rangers box and their attacker was brought down for a clear penalty, but the referee awarded a free-kick just outside the box. From the free-kick the ball landed at the feet of an unmarked Kilmarnock player at the back post but Callum Sandilands headed the shot off the line.
