15’s Win At Thistle

Partick Thistle 2 Rangers 3

Rangers Under 15’s edged out Thistle by the odd goal in five at Lochinch on Saturday morning despite missing two penalties. It was a deserved win although the margin was the smallest in meetings between these side in the last few years.

On five minutes Rangers came close when Thistle struggled to clear a ball into their penalty area and Robbie Ure’s shot was saved by the keeper diving to his right. Rangers took the lead five minutes later, Gavin Gallagher provided the pass for Robbie Ure to lob over the keeper and into the net.

Just before the quarter-hour Connor Allan picked up a clearance and tried his luck from around twenty-five yards but was just wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

The home side came close in the opening minute of the second half, the shot from the edge of the box coming back off Jack McConnell’s right hand post. Rangers immediately broke down the right and from the cross John Craig’s volley at the back post was handled by a defender. Robbie Ure stepped up but fired the spot kick wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

Back to the other end and Thistle attacked down the right and when the cross came in the ball was headed against the crossbar. The second half was eight minutes old when Robbie Ure broke to the edge of the box, his effort was saved by the keeper but John Craig was alert and knocked the rebound into the net.

On the hour mark Jack Harkness got to the right hand byline and his cutback found Robbie Ure who’s shot was saved to the keeper’s left. Within a minute Dire Mebude was tripped as he broke into the right side of the penalty area, he stepped up to take the penalty but his shot was too straight and the keeper saved.

The home side then had a chance with an attack through the middle and it took a fine save from Jack McConnell high to his left to prevent a goal. Rangers extended their lead just after the seventy minute mark, Kelsey Ewan attacked on the left and played the ball to Leyton Dunlop whose neat back heel from close to the left hand byline teed up John Craig who shot past the keeper.

With the final quarter-hour approaching there seemed little danger when Thistle moved the ball in from the left but a fine strike from fully thirty yards reduced the deficit. Thistle got the margin down to one with ten minutes remaining, from a free-kick on the edge of the box the ball found the net via a significant deflection off the defensive wall.

Rangers saw out the game comfortably to record a deserved win.
