20’s Share Spoils With ‘Well

Rangers 2 Motherwell 2

With a couple of overage players moving out on loan and three players on international duty with Scotland’s Under 19’s it was a young Rangers side that took the field at Dumbarton tonight. They came back from a goal down to take the lead but were pegged back in the second half and over the piece a draw was probably a fair result.

Motherwell took the lead in the ninth minute, Chris Cadden was sent clear down the right and he continued into the penalty area before beating Liam Kelly with a shot at his near post. Rangers replied with a long-range Josh Jeffries effort that Peter Morrison saved comfortably.

On eighteen minutes Scott Roberts took on and went past a defender inside the right side of the box with Peter Morrison standing up to block his shot at his near post. The equaliser was only delayed with Rangers scoring from the resultant corner, Ross Lyon played it short to Josh Jeffries who tricked a defender on the byline before firing in a low cross that David Brownlie knocked past the keeper.

Just after the midpoint of the half Jordan Thompson attacked the centre of the ‘Well defence, side-stepped a defender before going for goal that had Peter Morrison diving to his left to parry. Within sixty seconds Ross Lyon cut in from the left and his shot had Peter Morrison stretching to hold under his cross-bar.

As the half-hour approached Rangers took the lead from  brilliant free-kick, from just outside the right side of the Motherwell penalty area Jordan Thompson curled a shot over the wall and into the top corner of the net.

The visitor’s missed a great chance to draw level three minutes after the break, Jack McMillan got to the byline on the left and from his cross Dylan Mackin looked certain to score, but he was stretching and he could only knock the ball over the bar. With Motherwell now creating the better chances they failed to take another golden opportunity on seventy minutes, across into the box broke kindly for Robbie Leitch but his effort flew over the crossbar.

It was third time lucky for ‘Well with thirteen minutes remaining, Jack Hastie was sent clear and he bored down on goal, as he entered the box Dylan Dykes got back to make a challenge but the ball broke to Ryan Watters who had the simple chance to shoot past Liam Kelly. Both side created half chances in the time remaining, but neither could grab the winner and the game finished all square.
