Sunderland Edge Out U14’s

Rangers 2 Sunderland 3

Rangers Under 14’s lost out to the odd goal in five against a bigger, stronger and slightly older Sunderland side. With three players at The SuperCup NI with the U15’s and a couple of others on holiday Rangers squad was stretched and it was supplemented with three U13’s and a trialist, while Sunderland fielded a few 2009’s who would be considered U15’s in Scotland.

Rangers took the lead in the opening minute, Ethan Molloy’s strike from the edge of the box finding the net via the keeper’s right hand post. The visitors had a great chance on ten minutes deep inside the right side of Rangers box but the shot went wide of the near post.

Four minutes later Sunderland equalised from a good passing move that ended with a shot past the keeper from inside the right side of the penalty area. A further seven minutes had passed when Sunderland took the lead, a cross from the right was fired past the keeper.

With the midpoint of the second period approaching Sunderland extended their lead with a long range strike. The visitors then got the break of the ball deep inside Rangers box with Carter McEwan making a fine save at close range.

When Harry Collins flicked the ball over a defender to Daniel Owonyomi inside the box the Rangers striker lobbed a defender before being impeded by the keeper and the referee pointed to the spot. Ty O’Connor stepped up but the keeper dived to his right to parry, the referee ordered a retake and Rangers changed taker but the keeper again saved diving to his right to deny Daniel Owonyomi.

Early in the final period a Rudy Cash pass sent Daniel Owonyomi through but his shot was weak and the keeper saved comfortably. Rangers did grab a second goal from a super Arran MacMillan chip from the left side of the penalty area.
