Glasgow Cup Deafeat

Rangers 1 Celtic 3

After a fairly even but pretty uneventful first half, two goals in the opening four minutes of the second period pretty much secured the game for the visitors.

The first real chance of the game came on thirteen minutes, Zak Lovelace got to the right hand byline and laid the ball back to Adam Devine and the full-back’s cross found its way to Robbie Ure at the back post but his shot bounced across the six yard box and wide. Two minutes later Ben Summers went past two defenders inside Rangers half and it took a superb John Souttar block to stop the shot troubling Lewis Budinauckas.

Rangers were soon back on the attack and when Zak Lovelace passed to Ross McCausland inside the left side of the penalty area he shot straight at Josh Clarke. Midway through the half Charlie Lindsay passed to Zak Lovelace on the left side of the box where he passed to Bailey Rice but his twenty-five yard effort was just wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

At the other end a dangerous Adam Brooks cross from the right forced John Souttar to stoop and head behind for a corner to clear the danger. Five minutes before the break another dangerous cross from Adam Brooks from the right saw a great challenge from Adam Devine deny Ben Quinn at the back post. The ball was cleared as far as Mackenzie Carse on the edge of the box and he shot narrowly over.

Rangers then missed a great chance when Bailey Rice’s chipped pass picked out Charlie Lindsay on the edge of the six yard box but he failed to get a clean connection and Josh Clarke saved comfortably.

The visitor’s opened the scoring in the opening minute of the second half, Joey Dawson poking a cross from the left past Lewis Budinauckas. Their lead was doubled within a couple of minutes, a cross from the left was cleared from Rangers box but only as far as Mackenzie Carse who fired past the keeper.

Rangers tried to respond when Robbie Ure  passed to Ross McCausland on the right hand angle of the box where he shot straight at Josh Clarke. In Rangers next attack Arron Lyall burst into the right side of the penalty area with Josh Clarke standing tall to beat away the shot.

Celtic extended their lead on the hour, Ben Summers low corner from the right bounced past several bodies to Joey Dawson right in the middle of the six yard box and netted from close range. Rangers tried to respond and when Robbie Fraser broke forward on the left he exchanged passes with Charlie Lindsay  before shooting just wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

With the game inside the final twenty minutes Zak Lovelace on the left passed inside to Ross McCausland whose twenty-five yarder was straight at Josh Clarke. Five minutes later Rangers reduced the deficit, Zak Lovelace passed to Robbie Fraser who moved the ball on to Ross McCausland and his shot from the edge of the box found the keeper’s bottom left hand corner.

With nine minutes remaining Rangers really should have scored a second, Robbie Ure won possession inside the Celtic box and passed to Zak Lovelace who looked sure to score but shot wide of the keeper’s right hand post. At the other end an even better chance was passed up, Mackenzie Carse’s cross from the right picked out Joey Dawson inside the six yard box but his downward header bounced over.

Rangers finished with a couple of efforts on goal, Bailey Rice passed to Ross McCausland on the left and he cut in to the angle of the box before forcing Josh Clarke to save low to his left. From Ross McCausland’s pass Robbie Ure produced a great turn to make space inside the right side of the box but his shot clipped the outside of the near post.
