Two Hat Tricks For Colts

Rangers 8 Edinburgh University 2

Charlie McCann and Tony Weston both recorded hat-tricks in what proved ultimately to be a comfortable win for Rangers Colts at Dumbarton this afternoon. The margin of victory was probably a bit harsh on the students considering the number of chances they created over the ninety minutes.

Rangers took the lead on six minutes when Adam Devine broke on the right, his ball into the box saw Kane Ritchie-Hosler’s shot blocked but the ball broke to Tony Weston at the back post to shoot past the keeper. Rangers doubled their lead two minutes later, Kane Ritchie-Hosler being the provider with the pass to free Chris McKee to shoot past Jaques Hegarty.

A further two minutes had passed when Rangers had the ball in the net again, Adam Devine got to the right hand byline his cutback picked out Charlie McCann, Jacques Hegarty parried the shot to Adam Devine who knocked the ball into the net but was flagged offside. The visitors then showed they could be a threat, good play saw them move the ball across the edge of the penalty area from right to Max Condie on the left hand angle of the box and his shot forced Jay Hogarth to turn the ball wide of his right hand post.

Rangers next chance came just before the twenty minute mark, Adam Devine’s volleyed cross from the right found Tony Weston at the back post with Jacques Hegarty making the save. Rangers third goal was only delayed a few minutes, Chris McKee laying the ball back to Charlie McCann on the edge of the box, Jaques Hegarty seemed to have the shot covered but an awkward bounce beat the keeper’s dive.

The next chance came for the visitors, Patrick Baird in possession on the right hand byline cut the ball back for Innes Lawson who saw his shot blocked. On the half hour mark Luke Murray broke into the right side of Rangers penalty area and his ball across the six yard box only just evaded the sliding Robbie Sinclair.

A couple of minutes later Alex Bannon tested Jay Hogarth with a shot from the edge of the box and left of centre that the keeper saved diving to his right. The Uni side really should have scored six minutes before the break, Max Condie providing the cross from the left hand byline, Patrick Baird knocking it wide of the far post when he seemed certain to score.

It was the visitors who missed another gilt edged chance just before the break when Innes Lawson was through on Jay Hogarth after exchanging passes with Patrick Baird on the edge of the box but shot wide of the keeper’s left hand post.

The visitor’s continued where they left off at the end of the first half by creating and this time taking their next chance, substitute Isaac Watson providing the cross from the right for Ross McGuire to volley past Jay Hogarth at the back post. With the hour mark approaching Arron Lyall attacked the box and his reverse pass frees Chris McKee and from a tight angle he shoots at the keeper.

Rangers fourth goal arrived on the hour from a Charlie McCann free-kick from the left side of the box, his shot going straight through the defensive wall and beating the keeper at the near post. The next chance was another for Innes Lawson at the other end, from a cutback on the left he was denied by a Leon King block at the expense of a corner.

Rangers capitalised on that left off by scoring a fifth, Robbie Fraser was the creator on the left, picking out Charlie McCann who’s shot beat the keeper with the aid of a slight deflection. A sixth soon followed  when Chris McKee passed to Tony Weston inside the right side of the penalty area and he shot high past the keeper.

Credit to the University side as the next goal two minutes later came for them, Innes Lawson was impeded by Lewis MacKinnon and the referee pointed to the spot, he then stepped up to convert the penalty. Rangers reply was to score a seventh goal, Robbie Ure scoring from inside the right side of the penalty area.

The scoring was completed with six minutes remaining, Robbie Ure dispossessed Luke Murray on the left hand byline before rolling the ball across goal for Tony Weston to complete his hat-trick from close range.
