Reserves Comeback Stuns Hibs

Rangers 3 Hibernian 2

A superb comeback from Rangers reserves saw them comefrom two goals down to take the points at The Hummel Training Centre this afternoon. A strong Hibs side raced into a two goal lead inside eleven minutes, but a Glenn Middleton double saw Rangers draw level before the break. The Ibrox youngsters had the edge in the second half with a Stephen Kelly free-kick providing the late winner.

There was eight minutes on the clock when Oli Shaw’s driven low cross from the right presented Ryan Gauld with a chance, his initial effort was blocked but he made no mistake from the rebound on the six yard box. Three minute later the visitors grabbed a second, Ryan Gauld’s free-kick from just inside Rangers half picked out the run of the unmarked Oli Shaw and he was allowed a free header to nod past Kieran Wright.

Rangers first real chance came on twenty minutes, Liam Burt’s pass sent Lasana Coulibaly to the right hand byline inside the box and his shot from what seemed an impossible angle crashed of the face of the crossbar. Rangers reduced the deficit on the half-hour, there seemed little danger when Glenn Middleton was in possession on the right hand angle of the box but he curled a superb shot into the far top corner.

Five minutes later Rangers were level, when Aidan Wilson played the ball forward Liam Burt’s superb flick sent Glenn Middleton racing into the box,  Jonathan Spector challenged the ball broke to Lasana Coulibaly who was denied by a fine Adam Bogdan save but the ball came back to Glenn Middleton who scored from around eight yards. Two minutes before the break the ball landed at the feet of Sean Mackie and his effort from fully thirty yards was just wide of Kieran Wright’s left hand post.

Hibs were reduced to ten men just after the hour when Fraser Murray was shown a straight red for an over the top challenge on Cammy Palmer. With fifteen minutes remaining Innes Murray broke forward from right back and cut inside Matthew Shiels before shooting which Kieran Wright saved at his near post.

Within a minute Sean Mackie played the ball forward to Jamie Gullan on the left and his cross forced Kieran Wright to dive out to collect. With twelve minutes remaining a good move ended with a Dapo Mebude layoff on the edge of the box and a Glenn Middleton drive that Adam Bogdan gathered at the second attempt. Barely sixty seconds later Dapo Mebude passed to Stephen Kelly and his effort from around twenty-five yards and right of centre saw Adam Bogdan dive to his right to parry.

With seven minutes remaining Rangers edged ahead, Stephen Kelly superbly curling a free-kick from around twenty-five yards and left of centre over the defensive wall and inside Adam Bogdan’s right hand post. Rangers came close to adding a fourth, first Jordan Houston’s pass inside Sean Mackie allowed Josh McPake to drive the ball across the six yard box with Dapo Mebude just arriving too late. The final action was a Glenn Middleton effort from a free-kick on the right hand angle of the box that he fired just over.
