Rangers 1 Ross County 2

Rangers reserve side lost to Ross County at The Hummel Training Centre this afternoon. The young Rangers side had the bulk of the chances but it was against a Ross County side that was always a threat. Eventually the game was a tale of two penalties.

Rangers had a great chance in the opening minute with Liam Burt breaking into the left side of the penalty area but Ross Munro advanced from his line to make the block. The next chance came on twenty-five minutes when Josh McPake sent Stephen Kelly through the centre but his shot was weak and Ross Munro saved comfortably.

On the half hour mark Stephen Kelly’s through ball set up a race between Josh McPake and Ross Munro with the keeper saving bravely at the striker’s feet. Three minute later the visitors took the lead, a cross from the right had Kieran Wright under pressure and when he failed to gather the cross the ball fell for Joel Macbeath to net from close range.

Rangers responded with Liam Burt breaking into the left side of the box and his shot forced Ross Munro into a fine save diving to his left. Four minutes before the break Mark Gallagher powered into Rangers box leaving two defenders in his wake with Kieran Wright standing up to make the save. On the stroke of half-time Jordan Houston’s pass sent Josh McPake racing into the right side of the penalty area, he went past Ross Munro but could only find the side netting.

Rangers had an early chance after the break when Cammy Palmer fed Liam Burt on the left, he cut inside and went for goal with Ross Munro diving high to his left to turn the ball wide. Less than five minutes later Liam Burt in possession on the left passed inside to Stephen Kelly whose fine turn made space for the shot but again Ross Munro made the save.

A minute later Rangers had a great chance to draw level, Josh McPake inside the right side of the penalty area tried to go round the grounded Tom Grivosti but the defender handled and the referee pointed to the spot. Jordan Houston stepped up but was denied by Ross Munro diving to his right to parry. Rangers then had a let off on the hour mark, Ross Stewart fed Ross MacIver inside the left side of the box, he went past Kieran Wright but shot against the near post.

Less than five minutes later Rangers were level, Josh McPake attacked inside the right side of the box and when he took on a defender the ball broke for Jordan Houston to shoot past the keeper. There was now chances at both ends and when a cross from the right broke to James Wallace inside the box Kieran Wright produced a fine point-blank save.

The next chance came for Rangers, Liam Burt passed to Jamie Bajonas whose through ball sent Josh McPake clear but Ross Munro saved his weak shot easily. With ten minutes remaining Kieran Wright’s pass from a goal kick  saw Ben Williamson leave his pass back short, the Rangers keeper fired the ball against James Wallace and it ricocheted just wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

A minute later the Dingwall side grabbed what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot. Jordan Houston tripped James Wallace inside the left side of the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot with Ross Stewart stepping up to convert.
