Glasgow Cup Win For Under 20’s

Partick Thistle 1 Rangers 6

Rangers Under 20’s recorded a comfortable win against Partick Thistle in today’s Glasgow Cup Sectional tie at Lesser Hampden. The young Rangers side got off to a slow start and fell behind. It wasn’t until the midpoint of the half that they got a foothold in the game but finished level at half time before running away with the game after the break

Thistle took the lead on eight minutes and the goal was created and finished by former Rangers players. Andy Rodden swung over a corner from the right and Ruaridh McIntyre rose to power a header past Aidan McAdams. Just before the twenty-minute mark a long ball released Callum Wilson inside the right side of the penalty area but he shot across goal and just wide of the far post.

Rangers capitalised on that let off by drawing level when the half reached its midpoint. From Kai Kennedy’s through ball Ruaridh McIntyre was short with his pass back and Dapo Mebude won the race with Jamie Stevenson to poke the ball past the keeper. A couple of minutes later Jordan Houston got to the right hand byline and picked out Andy Dallas with his cutback but screwed his shot wide of the far post.

Rangers were now starting to take control and the next effort on goal came when Kai Kennedy passed inside from the left and Jordan Houston’s thirty yard drive was held under the bar by Jamie Stevenson. On the half hour Stephen Kelly passed to Dapo Mebude on the right side of the box, his shot was saved by Jamie Stevenson diving to his right and the defence scrambled clear.

The final chance of the half came when Jordan Houston played the ball forward to Dapo Mebude on the right side of the penalty area, he cut in past a defender before shooting just wide of the far post.

Rangers started the second half well and the first chance came in the fiftieth minute when Stephen Kelly tried his luck from around twenty-five yards, and left of centre, forcing Jamie Stevenson to tip over. The keeper was called into action again less than five minutes later, Kai Kennedy latching on to a loose ball on the edge of the box with Jamie Stevenson saving low to his left.

Within a minute Rangers were ahead Dapo Mebude was alert to intercept Scott Walker’s pass to Daniel Conner, break into the right side of the box and shoot past the keeper. A minuter later a slip from Daniel Conner almost led to Dapo Mebude’s hat-trick but was denied by a brave Jamie Stevenson at his feet.

Rangers scored a third on the hour, Jordan Houston’s enterprising run from right back took past two defenders to the edge of the box where he passed to Stephen Kelly on his left and he picked his spot back across the keeper in the bottom corner. Rangers scored a fourth just before the final quarter-hour, Kai Kennedy’s crossed from the right and Liam Burt nipped ahead of a defender to poke the ball in at the near post.

A few minutes later from Harris O’Connor’s pass forward Dapo Mebude’s flick allowed Andy Dallas to spin away from a defender and continue into the box where his shot was touched wide by Jamie Stevenson diving to his right.

Rangers fifth goal came with eight minutes remaining, Dapo Mebude attacking on the right and working his was along the byline before rolling the ball across goal to present Andy Dallas with a tap in. The final minute saw Rangers complete the scoring by grabbing  sixth, Chris McKee wide on the right passed to Andy Dallas who got to the byline and centred for Liam Burt to tap in from close range.
