Reserves Win At Dundee United

September 18, 2018

Dundee United 1 Rangers 2

A young Rangers team supplemented by Lee Wallace recorded a deserved win over a slightly more experienced Dundee United at St.Andrews University this afternoon. The young Rangers side were in control for most of the match but when Lewis Toshney reduced the deficit with a quarter-hour remaining they finished the game hanging on a bit.

Dundee United were first to threaten on seven minutes, Declan Glass in possession on the right passed inside to Billy King whose shot from the edge of the box was saved by Aidan McAdams low to his left. Three minutes later Rangers took the lead, a loose ball fell perfectly for Jack Thomson to run on to and beat Josh Donaldson low to his right from around twenty-five yards.

Just after the twenty-minute mark Cammy Palmer passed to Matthew Shiels and his shot from the edge of the box forced Josh Donaldson to dive to his left to save. The home side replied from a Fraser Fyvie free-kick on the edge of the box, it was a powerful strike but straight at Aidan McAdams who beat the ball away.

With the half hour mark approaching Matthew Shiels fed Andy Dallas who broke into the left side of the penalty area and his shot from a tight angle was blocked by Josh Donaldson’s foot. A few minutes later Dapo Mebude held the ball up and laid it back to Andy Dallas on the edge of the box and he again forced Josh Donaldson to make the save diving to his left.

Five minutes before the break Matty Smith broke down the right and when he passed inside it took a superb defensive block from Danny Finlayson to deny Declan Glass.

Half-Time:- Dundee United 0 Rangers 1

Rangers doubled their lead five minutes after the break, Dapo Mebude sent Andy Dallas through the inside right channel, he progressed into the box and his shot took a deflection off William Edjenguele and slipped through the grasp of Josh Donaldson. The next chance came when Dapo Mebude attacked the right side of the United penalty area before finding Andy Dallas with a back heel, another back heel teed up Cammy Palmer who shot just over.

When Cammy Palmer won the ball in midfield Stephen Kelly spotted Josh Donaldson off his line, his shot from the halfway line was heading for the net but the keeper got back to tip over. Midway through the half when Dapo Mebude was fouled on the edge of the box Stephen Kelly was only just wide of the keeper’s left hand post with his effort.

Five minutes later Matty Smith broke down the right and cut inside before shooting with Aidan McAdams turning the ball wide of his near post. With the final quarter-hour approaching Rangers lost a disappointing goal from a set play. Declan Glass swung over a corner from the right and Lewis Toshney stooped to head past Aidan McAdams from just outside the six yard box.

Five minutes later only a brilliant point-blank Aidan McAdams save kept Rangers lead intact, Mati Zata sent Matty Smith down the right and from his cross Louis Appere looked certain to score but the Rangers keeper somehow turned his powerful close ranger header over. Rangers were now hanging on, defending deeper and pretty much just knocking the ball back to United. But they did make a break to have the last real effort on goal with two minutes remaining. When Josh McPake’s attempted pass to Serge Atakayi came back to him off a defender his shot from the edge of the box was just wide of Josh Donaldson’s left hand post.
