April 30, 2018

Rangers 3 Celtic 0

Rangers Under 17’s lifted the Glasgow Cup with a comfortable win over Celtic at Firhill tonight. When Ciaran Dickson converted a penalty on he quarter-hour mark, two minutes after Celtic’s Brody Paterson was red carded the game was over as a contest. The Ibrox youngster controlled the rest of the game with only Ryan Mullen standing between them and a more convincing victory.

A quick break on thirteen minutes saw Josh McPake race clear through the inside right channel and he was brought down just outside the box by Brody Paterson who was shown a straight red card. Two minutes later Nathan Patterson crossed from the right when the ball reached the back post it was handled by Liam Morrison for a clear penalty that Ciaran Dickson stepped up to covert.

Another two minutes had elapsed passed to Josh McPake on the right hand angle of the box, his shot took a deflection and Ryan Mullen was forced to dive to his left to save. Midway through the half Nathan Patterson headed forward and a superb Dapo Mebude turn took him clear of Jack McDowall  and into the right side of the penalty area but he shot into the side netting.

Rangers doubled their lead just before the half hour with a superbly worked goal. The ball moved through midfield from Ben Williamson, Murray Miller and Kai Kennedy to Zac Butterworth on the left, he headed for the byline and his ball across goal found Ciaran Dickson at the back post to shoot past Ryan Mullen. Barely five minutes later a Dapo Mebude solo run took him past three defenders into the right side of the penalty area and only a great Chris McQueen challenge cleared the danger.

On the stroke of half-time Ciaran Dickson inside the penalty area laid the ball back to Kai Kennedy on the left hand angle and his shot had Ryan Mullen diving high to his left to save.

Half-Time:- Rangers 2 Celtic 0

The first chance of the second half came from a Kai Kennedy free-kick on the left hand angle of the box which was only just wide of Ryan Mullen’s left hand post. Five minutes later Rangers scored a superb third, Nathan Patterson broke forward from right back leaving two defenders in his wake, he exchanged passes with Josh McPake before rolling the ball across goal for Kai Kennedy to net from close range.

With the game in the final twenty minutes the Kyle McLelland switched play to James Maxwell on the right, a great first touch allowed him to cut inside before shooting straight at Ryan Mullen. Rangers had another couple of chances in the final few minutes, Josh McPake in possession on the left hand angle of the box passed inside to Kai Kennedy whose shot from the edge of the box was saved by Ryan Mullen high to his right.

The final chance was created by a Kai Kennedy through ball to release James Maxwell with Ryan Mullen again rescuing Celtic,
