Youths Win Against FC Copenhagen

A Rangers Under 19 side supplemented by Liam Kelly and Jordan Rossiter recorded a deserved win over FC Copenhagen at Auchenhowie this afternoon With both team pretty much cancelling each other out after the break most of the action  happened in the first half.

Rangers started well and when a second minute corner was cleared from the box Stephen Kelly fired in a decent shot but it was straight at Filip Djukic. Two minutes later Jamie Barjonas passed to Glenn Middleton on the left side of the box and he picked out Stephen Kelly on the edge of the box who shot narrowly over.

The Danish side took the lead with their first real attack on nine minutes, the attack started on the right and Felix Winther went past a couple of defenders as he made his way along the eighteen yard box before shooting past Liam Kelly. On eighteen minutes Serge Atakayi in possession on the left side of the box passed inside to Stephen Kelly and the ball broke to Zak Rudden whose shot was saved low to his right by Filip Djukic.

Three minutes later Zak Rudden latched on to a Liam Kelly clearance but his attempted lob was just too high. Within sixty seconds Rangers were level, Glenn Middleton robbed Rasmus Moller on the right side of the penalty area and his low ball across goal was converted by Zak Rudden at close range.

Just after the twenty-five minute mark Serge Atakayi on the left side of the box passed inside to Glenn Middleton and his net bound shot was deflected wide of the keeper’s right hand post. The corner was taken short and from Zak Rudden’s cross Lewis Mayo knocked the ball just wide at the back post.

The visitors responded when Mathias Host and Henrik Bellman exchanged passes on the left side of the box and teed up Morten Hjulmand and he shot narrowly over. With the half in the final quarter-hour Mathias Host’s corner from the right broke to Rasmus Moller who forced Liam Kelly to touch the ball on to the bar and over.

Four minutes before the break Jordan Rossiter on the right side of the box passed to Serge Atakayi inside the box, he laid the ball back to Stephen Kelly who shot straight at the keeper. The Ibrox youngsters then edged in front when Lewis Mayo rose to power a header past the keeper from Stephen Kelly’s corner from the left.

The second half was a disappointment by comparison, Rangers had the bulk of the play but the only really two incidents of note early in the half. A Stephen Kelly solo run took him past several defenders and into the penalty area before he was crowded out.

A couple of minutes before the hour mark the ball broke for Glenn Middleton on the left side of the penalty area, he passed inside to Zak Rudden and his effort was just wide of the far post. The Copenhagen youngsters applied a bit of pressure in the final five minutes but never threatened Liam Kelly’s goal.
