17’s Win Over Fife Academy

Rangers 3 Fife Elite 1

Rangers Under 17’s kept up their league challenge with a win over Fife Elite at Auchenhowie this afternoon. It was a comfortable win in terms of the balance of play although the three points weren’t secure until Kai Kennedy’s late third goal.

Rangers were first to threaten on nine minutes, Kai Kennedy passed to Josh McPake who advanced to the edge of the box before forcing a save from Chris Peden and the keeper reacted to smother Matty Yates effort from the rebound. Rangers continued to have the bulk of possession but it was the visitor’s who threatened on the half hour mark. Matthew Todd breaking forward before shooting from the edge of the box, Lewis Budinauckas got to his right to parry and Jay Mack reacted quickest to clear the danger.

Four minutes later the Fife youngsters took the lead, Lewis McCann broke forward and when his attempted pass came back to him off a Rangers defender his twenty-five yarder found the net just inside Lewis Budinauckas left hand post. Rangers were only behind for around two minutes, Dapo Mebude passed to Josh McPake on the left hand angle of the box, he cut inside before shooting and the ball broke off a defender for Jay Mack to net from close range.

The Ibrox youngsters got in front a couple of minutes before the break, Josh McPake in possession outside the left side of the box passed  to Dapo Mebude just inside the box and his superb strike found the far top corner via the underside of the bar.

The first real chance after the break came around the hour mark, Zac Butterworth played the ball forward to Josh McPake who passed inside to Matty Yates and his effort from the edge of the box forced Chris Peden to save low to his right. Almost immediately Matty Yates in possession on the left hand byline passed to Kai Kennedy on the left hand angle, the Rangers midfielder curled a shot towards the far top corner with Chris Peden saving high to his left.

With the game now in the final five minutes Kai Kennedy attacked the centre of the Fife defence leaving defenders in his wake to enter the box, only to be denied by a fine save from Chris Peden. The keeper was soon in action again this time saving Josh’s McPake’s effort from a tight angle after he progressed along the right hand byline.

With injury time imminent Rangers made the points safe when Kai Kennedy curled a free kick from the left hand angle of the box 0ver the defensive wall and in off the inside of the near post. Deep in injury time the visitor’s came close to a second, when a corner from the left was cleared from the penalty area Thomas Marks shot from distance rebounded from the crossbar.
