Heavy Defeat For 17’s

March 7, 2018

Celtic 5 Rangers 2

Rangers Under 17’s suffered a heavy defeat in their Glasgow Cup tie at Lennoxtown tonight. A poor start saw them two goals down after ten minutes, despite briefly getting back on level terms they were pretty much second best throughout and can have few complaints.

There was only four minutes on the clock when Rangers lost a disastrous opening goal. Lewis Budinauckas played a short goal kick to Harris O’Connor who was under pressure, his return pass to the keeper was short and Scott Robertson won the challenge with the keeper to roll the ball into the net. Five minutes later the ball broke to Paul Kennedy on the edge of the box his shot was only just wide of Lewis Budinauckas left hand post.

Barely sixty seconds later Celtic doubled their lead, from a free-kick on the right hand angle of the box Paul Kennedy curled the ball over the wall and into the net via Lewis Budinauckas left hand post.  Rangers got back into the game with their first real effort on goal, Zac Butterworth’s cross from the right side of the penalty area had Matty Yates stretching to volley in at the back post.

With the half-hour mark approaching Karamoko Dembele in possession on the right passed inside to Paul Kennedy who’s twenty-five yard strike was saved by Lewis Budinauckas low to his left. A further five minutes had passed when Karamoko Dembele attacked the centre of Rangers box before playing in Kieran McGrath inside the right side of the penalty area with Lewis Budinauckas diverting his shot wide of his left hand post with his foot. A decent Rangers passing move ended with Kai Kennedy in possession and his twenty-five yarder was narrowly wide of Ryan Mullen’s right hand post.

Celtic started the half on the front foot and two minutes in Kieran McGrath charged down Kyle McLelland’s clearance and broke down the left, from his low cross Scott Robertson was denied by Lewis Budinauckas at point-blank range. Within a minute Dylan Forrest played the ball forward to Karamoko Dembele on the right side of the box and his shot was diverted wide of the far post by Lewis Budinauckas.

Rangers capitalised on their keeper’s saves by drawing level on fifty-three minutes, a quick break saw Matty Yates send Murray Miller breaking clear on the right, he passed inside to Zac Butterworth who showed great composure to side step a defender and shoot past the keeper. Rangers were only back on level terms for six minutes. Kieran McGrath passed to Karamoko Dembele on the right side of the box and his pass released Scott Robertson, Lewis Budinauckas stood up to block the initial shot but was helpless as the Celtic player netted the rebound.

Ten minutes later Karamoko Dembele broke on the right, he cut inside past two Rangers defenders before shooting into Lewis Budinauckas bottom right hand corner. With the game now in the final quarter-hour Celtic added a fifth, a corner from the left went to the right side of Rangers box,  Lewis Budinauckas saved the shot but the ball went to the left hand byline and when it was played across goal for Barry Coffey to net from close range.

With the game beyond them Rangers finished with a flourish, Ciaran Dickson broke forward and from his pass into the box Dapo Mebude showed good strength to get the ball to Kai Kennedy inside the left side of the penalty area but he shot into the side netting. The next chance came when Dapo Mebude passed to Kai Kennedy who delayed his pass to pick out the overlapping Nathan Patterson on the left, he cut inside a defender before shooting with Jack McDowall clearing from the line.

The final chance came when Rangers worked the ball to Josh McPake on the edge of the penalty area and his shot forced a save from Ryan Mullen diving to his left.
