Youth Teams Take On Thistle

April 30, 2017

This weekend’s fixtures saw Rangers take on Partick Thistle at various age groups, first up was Friday night’s Under 16’s clash at Lochinch.

Partick Thistle 2 Rangers 6

Rangers took the lead after only five minutes, a good turn from Dapo Mebude inside the right side of the penalty area created the space to pick out a pass across the box for Josh McPake to shoot past the keeper. The midway point of the half was approaching when Rangers doubled their lead, Kieran McKechnie delivered a free-kick from the right hand angle of the box and Jay Mack beat the keeper to the ball and headed into the net.

The game hadn’t reached the half-hour mark when Rangers scored a third, Kieran McKechnie swung in a corner from the left and Danny Finlayson powered a header past the keeper.

Rangers had an early chance after the break, Danny Finlayson played the ball forward to Gregor Woods and his pass played through Kieran McKechnie but the keeper came from his line to make the block. Number four came on the hour mark, from a free-kick just outside the left side of the penalty area Josh McPake’s low pass into the box picked out Niyah Joseph who netted from the edge of the six yard box.

Credit to the home side who responded immediately by reducing the deficit, when the ball was played across to the right hand angle of Rangers penalty area the shot beat Nicky Hogarth low at his left hand post. Ranger scored a fifth midway through the half from the penalty spot, Dapo Mebude was tripped as he broke into the right side of the penalty area and he stepped up to convert from the spot.

Within a couple of minutes the Ibrox youngsters scored again, Gregor Woods exchanged passes with Niyah Joseph on the right side of the penalty area before shooting across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. Thistle ended the match on the front foot and when they broke into the left side of the box it took a fine Nicky Hogarth save low to his right to turn the ball wide.

With two minutes remaining Thistle played the ball into the box from the right and the shot found the net via Nicky Hogarth’s right hand post.

Sunday gave me the choice of three games with the U14’s at Springburn Park and the U13’s and U15’s at Murray  Park all with 10am kick-offs, I chose the oldest age group.

With injuries and suspensions hitting the U15’s  Robbie Fraser and Leon King were promoted from the U14’s , although it should be noted that Leon is actually an U13, with two trialists were on the substitutes bench.

A penalty after only two minutes gave Rangers an early lead, Owen McGinty was brought down as he attacked inside the left side of the penalty area and Kai Kennedy converted from the penalty spot. On thirteen minutes Owen McGinty’s through ball released Ryan Muir inside the left side of the box but the Thistle keeper was quick from his line to block with his legs.

Within a minute Owen McGinty was attacking the centre of the Thistle defence and his shot from the edge of the box forced the keeper to make a diving save. On eighteen minutes Kai Kennedy and Owen McGinty worked the ball outside the right side of the penalty area from where it was passed to Ally Monro on the edge of the box with the keeper producing a fine save diving high to his right.

Rangers doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, Simon Millar crossed from the right and the ball went to Robbie Fraser on the left hand angle of the box, he crossed back into the centre for Aaron Bryson to head past the keeper.

Half-Time:- Rangers 2 Partick Thistle 0

Once again the half began with an early goal and it was Partick that grabbed it to reduce the deficit, the attack came down the right and the cross was headed firmly past Lewis Budinauckas. Rangers continued to have the bulk of possession but there was only a quarter-hour remaining when the third goal came along. When the ball was played into the Thistle penalty area it broke for Andrew Arthurs on the right side of the box and he shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net.

With the clocking heading for the ninety minute mark Rangers scored a fourth, Kai Kennedy swung a corner from the left towards the back post where Ally Monro rose to head past the keeper.
