20’s Lose To Motherwell

Motherwell 2 Rangers 1

A young Rangers Development side failed to recover from a poor first half and went down by the odd goal in three to Motherwell at Excelsior Stadium tonight.

Motherwell had the first chance on five minutes when Dylan Falconer broke into the right side of the penalty area, his shot was saved by Robbie McCrorie and David Bates completed the clearance knocking the ball behind for a corner. Rangers replied from a Jamie Barjonas free-kick from thirty yards that had PJ Morrison diving to his left to turn the ball wide.

Less than five minutes later Dom Thomas attacked the centre of Rangers defence before passing to Dylan Mackin inside the right side of the penalty area, his cutback found Jake Hastie who forced a fine save from Robbie McCrorie low to his left. Midway through the half Motherwell took the lead, Dylan Mackin again broke through on the right side of the box, he picked out Dylan Falconer on the edge of the box who’s shot was deflected to Jake Hastie on the edge of the six yard box and he shot past Robbie McCrorie.

Almost immediately Jake Hastie passed to Dom Thomas who fed the overlapping Tom Fry and his cross had Robbie McCrorie diving to collect. Just before the half-hour Dom Thomas delivered a corner from the left that Jake Hastie headed just wide of the far post.

From a Myles Beerman throw in a Liam Burt snap shot from the left hand angle of the box forced PJ Morrison to save low at his near post. At the other end Dom Thomas picked up a clearance and his shot from around twenty-five yards was tipped over by Robbie McCrorie.

Four minutes before the break Ross Lyon attacked left of centre, his pass inside was dummied by Zak Rudden to set up a great chance for Jamie Barjonas with PJ Morrison producing a fine save to turn the ball over. When Billy Gilmour played the ball into the box two minutes later Jordan Armstrong’s miscued clearance landed for Zak Rudden and it looked a decent penalty claim when challenged by Barry Maguire but the referee awarded a corner.

Motherwell doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, Dom Thomas attacked the centre of Rangers defence and when his shot was blocked it broke to David Turnball who found the net from the edge of the box.

Half-Time:- Motherwell 2 Rangers 0

Eight minutes into the second half Ross Lyon picked out the unmarked Zak Rudden around the penalty spot but his header was weak and PJ Morrison saved comfortably. Within a couple of minutes Rangers pulled a goal back, Ross Lyon passed to Liam Burt who advanced to the edge of the box and found the bottom corner with a right foot shot.

Liam Burt had another effort just after the hour mark, this time from distance but is was just wide of the keeper’s left hand post. Rangers final chance came when David Bates rose to meet a corner from the left but his header was wide of the far post.
