Tuesday’s Youth Double Header

With the Under 20’s playing at Kelty in the afternoon then an Under 16’s game at Murray Park in the evening it was an opportunity to take in two games today.

Dunfermline Athletic 1 Rangers 0

A poor game, with a poor performance ending with a poor result. With the exception of the penalty that produced the winning goal the serious goalmouth efforts ended on eight minutes, with Rangers only real chance coming six minutes earlier.

Rangers came close to taking the lead with that second minute chance, Lewis White got to the byline on the left and from his cutback Serge Akatayi was denied by a superb Cammy Gill save at point-blank range. Three minutes later John Herron’s free-kick from wide right was headed goalwards by Ciaran Lafferty that forced Kieran Wright to tip over.

A further three minutes had elapsed when another John Herron free-kick from the right found the head of a Dunfermline player, this time Callum Fordyce’s effort coming back off the crossbar. Ten minutes before the break Ross Lyon’s free-kick from wide on the left was sent beyond the back post giving David Bates the opportunity to head back across goal but he headed weakly into the side netting.

Half-Time:- Dunfermline Athletic 0 Rangers 0

Only two minutes had elapsed in the second half when Scott Lochhead latched on to a slack Ross Lyon pass, he passed to Callum Smith who was tripped on the edge of the box, it looked just outside but the referee thought different and the striker converted from the spot. The only other effort on goal came four minutes from time, Conner Duthie’s free- kick from the left hand angle of the box was saved comfortably by Kieran Wright at his near post.

The evening game saw Rangers field three trialists and run out comfortable winners, with all three showing up well.

Rangers took an early lead, on four minutes, Lewis McGrattan’s pass picking out Alberto Balde’s run into the right side of the penalty area and he rounded the keeper before rolling the ball into the net. From a short corner on the right on seventeen minutes, Kieran McKechnie played the ball to Gregor Woods on the angle of the box and his cross come shot forced the keeper to tip over.

Within in sixty seconds Rangers double their lead, Kieran McKechnie swung in a cross from the left and when a defender headed the ball to Alberto Balde he blasted the ball past the keeper from around the penalty spot. With twenty minutes of the half remaining Kieran McKechnie’s corner from the left broke to Alberto Balde, he teed up Niyah Joseph who was denied by a fine save.

Rangers scored a third eight minutes before the break, the move involved Ben Wylie, Alberto Balde and Gregor Woods to release Kieran McKechnie on the left side of the penalty area and he shot past the keeper. There was still time for Kieran McKechnie to force the keeper to stretch and tip over from a free-kick from wide on the left.

Half-Time:- Rangers 3 Airdrie 0

Rangers fourth came twelve minutes into the second half from the penalty spot, Lewis McGrattan’s pass found Niyah Joseph on the edge of the box, he went past a defender before being brought down inside the box and he got up to convert the penalty. On the hour mark Airdrie sent in a corner from the right and the referee spotted an infringement and awarded a penalty, Lewis Muir guessed right and got a hand to the shot but couldn’t keep it out.

Midway through the half Gregor Woods was sent down the right and when he rolled the ball across the six yard box Lewis McGrattan looked certain to score at the back post until the keeper produced a brilliant save. With just under fifteen minutes remaining Owen McGinty’s free-kick from the edge of the box beat the keeper but bounced off his right hand post.

Just before the final whistle a slip allowed Alberto Balde to break into the right side of the penalty area, his shot was parried by the keeper but Ciaran Dickson followed up to net the rebound.
