Glasgow Cup Win For 17’s

Partick Thistle 0 Rangers 2

A good first half performance where Rangers created a host of chances and scored two goals was the foundations of tonight’s win. The second half tailed off a bit although Rangers were still the most likely to find the net. The home side never really troubled Brian Kinnear’s goal in the ninety minutes.

Only a brilliant save prevented Rangers taking the lead on six minutes, from Jordan Houston’s right-wing cross Matthew Shiels header looked destined for the net until the Thistle keeper got down to his right to push the ball wide. The first goal was delayed by three minutes, another cross from the right had the keeper struggling to paw away, Dapo Mebude’s shot was blocked and when the ball came to the edge of the box  Jack Thomson beat the keeper with the aid of a deflection.

On twenty minutes Dapo Mebude skinned a defender on the right and played the ball into Jordan Houston who’s effort was saved and the Thistle defence scrambled clear. Five minutes later a clearance sent Dapo Mebude racing clear from halfway, he continued into the box but was denied by the keeper who saved low to his left.

Just after the half hour Matthew Shiels picked out Mati Zata who’s shot was deflected just wide of the keeper’s left hand post. Six minutes before the break Jack Thomson and Matthew Shiels combined to free Mati Zata inside the left side of the penalty area and his shot brought out another fine save from the keeper.

Rangers doubled their lead three minutes before the break, Jordan Houston attacked the centre of the defence before playing in Matthew Shiels on the left side of the box and he slotted past the keeper. On the stroke of half time Dapo Mebude broke from halfway before shooting from the edge of the box which the keeper blocked with Matthew Shiels following up to net the rebound only to be flagged offside.

Just after the hour Thistle came closest to threatening Rangers goal, a shot from wide left flashed across goal and wide of the far post. Rangers responded with Matthew Shiels taking on a defender on the edge of the box before forcing the keeper to tip over.

As the game entered the final quarter-hour Carlo Pignatiello and Jordan Houston worked a short corner on the right and from the former’s cross Matthew Shiels headed narrowly over. Rangers missed a great chance when Dapo Mebude read a pass back and was quickly on the ball, he prodded the ball past the advancing keeper but wide of his right hand post.
