Late Stunner For 20’s

Rangers 1 St.Johnstone 2

It was  cruel sucker punch in the final minute for a young Rangers side, whose average age was just over 17, tonight at Forthbank. Following a fairly even first half the young Gers dominated after the break playing some great passing football. They couldn’t quite edge in front and were left pointless with the visitor’s late strike.

Rangers had the first chance on eight minutes, when Ben McKenzie’s clearance from the left hand byline and wide of the goal went straight to Andy Dallas he fired for goal with Greg Page getting back to head from the line. Saints replied four minutes later with an attack down the left and from Jamie Docherty’s cross Greg Hurst headed for goal which Kieran Wright saved.

The visitors missed a great chance six minutes later, the attack again was on the left and when the ball into the box broke for the unmarked Jamie Docherty on the edge of the six yard box at the back post he fired over. Just after the half hour Jordan Houston played the ball forward to Andy Dallas on the right, he cut inside to the edge of the box and shot narrowly over.

As the half entered the final ten minutes St.Johnstone took the lead, a free-kick from the left hand touchline was headed clear from Rangers penalty area but only as far as Connor McLaren who fired a twenty-five yarder into the far top corner. Rangers got back on level terms four minutes before the break, Josh Jeffries superb pass inside Cameron Lumsden allowed Serge Atakayi to break into the left side of the penalty area and shoot past the keeper.

Seven minutes into the second half Jordan Houston played the ball forward to Serge Atakayi on the right, his ball into the box broke back to Jordan Houston off a defender and it took a great block to divert his shot over. Within a minute Josh Jeffries played a quick corner on the right to Jamie Barjonas on the angle of the box and from his cross Aidan Wilson headed straight at the keeper.

Just after the hour Max Ashmore played the ball forward to Zak Rudden on the edge of the box, he turned past Jason Kerr to get his shot away but Ben McKenzie somehow managed to push the ball over. On seventy minutes some great passing down the right involving Jordan Houdton, Josh Jeffries and Serge Atakayi ended with a Jamie Barjonas header  from a Josh Jeffries cross that Ben McKenzie saved.

With a quarter-hour remaining Josh Jeffries broke forward and played the ball through for Zak Rudden inside the right side of the penalty area but he shot across goal and narrowly wide of the far post. Five minutes later Max Ashmore played the ball forward to Josh Jeffries who’s shot from the edge of the box beat Ben McKenzie but bounced off his right hand post.

In the final minute Amin Abaradan lost possession just inside his own half that allowed Saints to break down the right and when the ball was played into the box Joe Johnson shot past Kieran Wright.
