Heavy Defeat For 17’s

Rangers 0 Hamilton Accies 4

Rangers Under 17’s suffered a heavy defeat against Hamilton Accies at Murray Park this afternoon. Where as some may point to a few players unavailable and others to the results don’t matter philosophy, while taking both these factors into consideration I personally think any Rangers team should not be losing by four goals to Hamilton Accies.

After a fairly even opening twenty minutes the visitors created the first chance, their winger worked his way along the byline and his ball across the six yard box was just missed by an attacker as it flashed across goal. Four minutes later they took the lead, their right winger cut inside Scott Gray before hitting a lofted shot over Lewis Muir and into the far top corner.

Eight minutes before the break Sam Jamieson was in possession on the right, he passed inside to Cammy Palmer wh0’s twenty five yarder was wide of the keeper’s right hand post. On the stroke of half time Jordan Houston broke forward from defence and played in Matthew Shiels on the right side of the penalty area, but he dragged his shot across goal and wide of the far post.

Rangers missed a great chance to draw level six minutes into the second half. A short corner was worked on the left and good interplay between Billy Gilmour, Stephen Kelly and Sam Jamieson ended with the latter crossing from the byline, the Accies keeper was stretching to get a touch and when the ball dropped at the far post Danny Finlayson could only poke it wide from close range. The visitors capitalised on that let off three minutes later, the right winger went past Scott Gray inside the right side of the box and was taken out by Danny Finlayson for a clear penalty which was duly converted.

A further three minutes had passed when Accies added a third, their right winger dispossessed Scott Gray and broke into the centre of the box, his shot came back off Lewis Muir’s left hand post but their striker followed up to net the rebound. With just over twenty minutes remaining Accies had a two on one break following a Rangers corner and it took a great Matthew Shiels challenge to clear the danger.

As the final quarter hour approached Sam Jamieson worked inside from the right hand angle before playing in Dapo Mebude but he shot straight at the keeper. Accies scored a fourth with six minutes remaining, they attacked the right side of Rangers penalty area where Matthew Shiels won a challenge but the ball broke to the edge of the box from where it was fired past Lewis Muir. Rangers came close to a consolation goal a couple of minutes later. Matthew Shiels got to the left hand byline and his low cross was met by Michael Hewitt who was denied by a point blank save. When the ball was cleared from the penalty area Matthew Shiels fired in a twenty-five yarder that had the keeper stretching to tip over.
