Sunderland created the first chance on five minutes with an attack into the right side of Rangers penalty area but the shot was across Lewis Budinauckas and wide of the far post. Rangers replied three minutes later when Ciaran Dickson moved the ball forward to Owen McGinty who’s shot from the edge of the box forced the keeper to save low to his right. As the twenty-minute mark approached the ball was moved in from the left and Kai Kennedy’s effort was powerful enough but straight at the goalkeeper.

The visitor’s took the lead on twenty-six minutes, when the ball was played through the inside right channel Lewis Budinauckas came out bravely at the striker’s feet but the ball broke kindly for the attacker who rolled it into the empty net. Rangers had a quick chance to draw level a minute later, Matty Yates sent Simon Millar breaking into the right side of the penalty area but his shot was weak and the keeper saved comfortably.

Within a further sixty seconds Rangers were two down, from a free-kick on the edge of the box the ball was sent high to Lewis Budinauckas left and into the net. Just after the half-hour a great first touch took the Sunderland winger into the left side of the box, Lewis Budinauckas produced a good parry and a superb Kyle McClelland clearance prevented the rebound being converted.

Sunderland attacked again ten minutes before the break and Rangers failed to take a couple of opportunities to clear the danger, they were eventually punished when a shot was put beyond Lewis Budicauckas and into the net.
