Rangers 5 Dundee United 2

Rangers got over their surprise defeat to Fife Elite at the weekend with a comfortable win over Dundee United at Murray Park tonight. With some of the 17’s in first team and U20’s squads over the next few days it was a young Rangers side that secured tonight’s win.

Rangers had an early chance when Matthew Shiels chased a long ball into the left side of the Dundee United penalty area, he held off the challenge of a defender but was denied as the keeper came off his line to block. Rangers opened the scoring on thirteen minutes, Andy Dallas and Jordan Houston carved open the United defence on the right, with Jordan Houston breaking into the penalty area to shoot past the keeper.

Rangers grabbed a second two minutes later, a mix up between a United defender and keeper saw the ball fall for Matthew Shiels to turn the ball into the net from around the penalty spot. A Kieran Wright clearance released Andy Dallas down the right allowing him to break into the penalty area, his attempted cross came back to him off a defender with the keeper saving his shot at the near post.

By the twenty minute mark Rangers scored a third with a great move. Andy Dallas passed to Sam Jamieson, his return pass inside the left-back released Andy Dallas and allowed him to roll the ball across goal for Matthew Shiels to fire past the keeper. Fifteen minutes later another fine move saw the ball move from right to left from Jordan Houston via Matthew Shiels and Sam Jamieson to Stephen Kelly on the left hand angle of the box, his effort beat the keeper but bounced of the top of the crossbar.

Just before the break some good play by the visitors on the right hand angle of the box  created space for a shot that beat Kieran Wright but bounced off the crossbar.

United created a good opportunity in the opening minute of the second half, attacking the right side of Rangers penalty area and forcing a save from Kieran Wright at his near post. A few minutes later a solo run from their wide right attacker took him into the right side of Rangers penalty area where his shot past Kieran Wright.

Rangers replied with two chances in as many minutes, a Jordan Houston pass sent Andy Dallas racing clear on the right side of the penalty area but the keeper stood up to make the save. Stephen Kelly them crossed from the right for Lewis Mayo to head goalwards with the keeper getting down low to his left to save.

United the capitalised by reducing the deficit to one goal, the ball was moved from left to the attacker wide right who hit the byline before crossing low, which was converted at close range. Rangers restored a two goal lead soon after, a short corner on the right allowed Stephen Kelly to cross for Lewis Mayo to head past the keeper.

Rangers then grabbed a fifth from the penalty spot, Jack Adamson latched on to a loose ball and broke into the right side of the box where he was brought down, the penalty was duly converted by Jordan Houston. The next attack came from the visitors and a shot from the left hand angle of the box which forced a superb save from Kieran Wright high to his right.

The final chance of the match came when an Andy Dallas pass played Mati Zata though with the United keeper making a fine save at close range.
