Harsh Lesson For Young Rangers Side

Rangers 0 Hamilton Accies 4

Following on from Monday night’s Youth Cup tie Rangers took on Hamilton Accies in the Development League at Dumbarton tonight. With no outfield players starting both games it was a very young starting eleven that took the field with four 16 and four 17 year olds in the starting lineup. There were some positives to take from the game but they will be disappointed with the standard of the goals they lost.

The visitor’s took the lead in the third minute, a miscued clearance landed at the feet of Stephen Boyd outside the left side of Rangers box and with Robbie McCrorie off his line he lobbed the ball of the keeper and into the net. Rangers tried to respond immediately from a long-range Kyle Bradley effort that Alan Martin saved comfortably.

With seven minutes on the clock Stephen Boyd attacked the left side of Rangers penalty area before passing inside to Ryan Tierney who was denied by a superb Robbie McCrorie save low to his right. Another long-range effort was Rangers reply, this time from Jamie Brandon that took a nick of a defender on the way over.

As the half hour approached a free-kick from midway inside Rangers half fell for Alex D’Acol with Robbie McCrorie saving at close range, Jamie Sendles-White’s effort from the rebound was cleared from the line by Jamie Brandon and with the goal at his mercy Ryan Tierney blazed the third attempt over from inside the six yard box. After surviving that scare Rangers fell further behind two minutes later. Alex D’Acol’s pass sprung Rangers attempt to play offside and sent Ryan Tierney in the clear, he continued into the box before rolling the ball to Stephen Boyd, his initial shot came back of the underside of the bar but with the Rangers defence hesitant he had time to gather the rebound and fire high past Robbie McCrorie.

Any thoughts of a comeback was dashed seven minutes after the break, Alex D’Acol sent Ben Reilly to the byline on the right and when Robbie McCrorie failed to gather his low driven cross Ryan Tierney had a simple task to net from close range. As the final quarter-hour approached Stephen Boyd attacked the left side of the box and passed inside to Ross Cunningham who side-stepped Jason Krones but couldn’t beat Robbie McCrorie who produced a fine point-blank save.

The scoring was completed with nine minutes remaining, Stephen Boyd attacked the centre of Rangers defence and the ball broke to Mark Kelly, Robbie McCrorie appeared to be wrong footed and the substitute’s shot from the edge of the box squirmed past him.
