Glasgow Cup Win At Lennoxtown

Celtic 0 Rangers 1

Rangers Under 17’s recorded a deserved win over Celtic in tonight’s Glasgow Cup group game at Lennoxtown. Liam Burt’s first half strike was enough to secure the three points, and two wins from two games sees the Ibrox youngsters top the group.

Rangers started brightly but apart from a coupe of efforts that were well wide neither side were looked likely to score in the early stages. There was almost thirty minutes on the clock when Jack Aitchison found Mikey Johnston in space in front of Rangers back four and his shot from the edge of the box just cleared Kieran Wright’s crossbar.

Four minutes later Rangers took the lead, Kyle Bradley played the ball up to the halfway line on the right, Zak Rudden’s superb first time pass released Liam Burt, he broke towards the box, dropped a shoulder to side step a defender before shooting past Aiden McAdams from the edge of the box.

Rangers came close to doubling their lead seven minutes before the break, Stephen Kelly on the left passed inside to Liam Burt, he attacked the penalty area before sipping a pass through to Zak Rudden inside the right side of the penalty area with Aiden McAdams saving at his near post. Just before the break Celtic broke forward and an exchange of passes between Mikey Johnston and Jack Aitchison opened up the Rangers defence, from the final pass into the box Jack Aitchison looked offside but the flag never came and it took a brilliant one-handed save from Kieran Wright low to his right to keep Rangers lead intact.

A quick break five minutes after the break almost saw Rangers score a second, Liam Burt broke forward and passed to Zak Rudden on the left, his pass across the box found Andy Dallas who shot across the face of goal. Almost immediately Andy Dallas attacked the down the right and went past Daniel Church towards the byline with Aiden McAdams saving his shot from a narrow angle at his near post.

As the hour mark approached a great piece of skill took Stephen Kelly away from his marker and towards the Celtic box but his shot was too high and flew over the crossbar. Celtic missed their best opportunity to draw level on seventy-two minutes, Daniel Church crossed from the left and found Jack Aitchison unmarked at the back post but he headed back across goal and wide of Kieran Wright’s right hand post.

The home side again threatened two minutes later, Ross McLaughlin attacked on the right before passing inside to Mikey Johnston who’s shot had Kieran Wright stretching to tip over. Rangers were soon back on the attack, Liam Burt passed to Andy Dallas on the right and he cut inside before shooting just wide of the far post.

Within a minute Kieran Balfour played the ball up to halfway where Zak Rudden and Andy Dallas combined to send the former down the right, he continued into the penalty area, where his shot from a tight angle was saved by Aiden McAdams. Rangers were pushing to make the game safe, Grant Nelson played the ball up to Zak Rudden who turned on the edge of the box before firing over Aiden McAdams crossbar. Celtic had a final chance to put pressure on Rangers from a free-kick from wide on the right, when the ball was knocked up in the air Kieran Wright came from his line to clear the danger with a great punch.

Deep into injury time Zak Rudden chased a ball down the left before bullying his way past Wallace Duffy and forcing Aiden McAdams to save low to his right at his near post. The final significant action of the match saw Jack Aitchison shown a straight red card for a stamp on Kyle Bradley.
