August 1, 2015

Queen of the South 1 Rangers 3

A Rangers side made up of six under 17’s, two under 18’s and one each at Under 16, Under 19 and Under 20 took on Queen of the South’s Under 20’s at Palmerston last night. In an entertaining game Rangers came from behind to secure a deserved win.

The Ibrox youngsters got off to the worst possible start going behind in the opening minute. When a cross came in from the right Kyle Bradley headed the ball down inside the penalty area, it went straight to a Queen’s attacker who shot past Robbie McCrorie. Rangers replied almost immediately when Grant Nelson attacked from halfway before feeding Liam Burt on the right side of the box and he shot across goal and wide of the far post.

Rangers next chance again came from the right, Liam Burt passing inside to Sam Jamieson who shot narrowly wide of the keeper’s left hand post. The equaliser soon came, on eleven minutes, Grant Nelson broke forward following a Queen’s corner, his cross field pass found Premyslaw Dachnowicz breaking in to the left side of the box, he chested the ball forward before driving past the keeper.

Rangers came close to taking the lead just after the half-hour, Jamie Mills powerful free-kick from just outside the right side of the box clipping the crossbar of the way over. Five minutes before the break Liam Burt in possession on the left passed inside to Jamie Barjonas who shot just wide of the keeper’s right hand post..

The young Rangers side weren’t to be denied and took the lead right on half-time, Queen’s struggled to clear following a corner from the left and when the ball fell for Premyslaw Dachnowicz he fired past the keeper from the edge of the six yard box.

Rangers had an early chance in the second-half and it came from a solo effort from Jamie Brandon, breaking forward from right-back he cut inside a defender inside the box before shooting narrowly over. With twenty minutes remaining the home side attacked down the right, from the driven cross the ball was deflected goalwards and it to a great reaction save from Kieran Wright to keep Rangers lead intact.

As the game was about to enter the final quarter-hour the ball broke from the Queen’s box, Grant Nelson’s drive was powerful but straight, the keeper parried and SamJamieson fired the rebound against the crossbar but was flagged offside. A couple of minutes later Liam Burt took a quick corner on the left and passed to Jamie Barjonas on the angle of the box with the keeper getting down low to his right to save.

The home side then missed a great chance to draw level with ten minutes remaining, when a corner from the right was cleared from the Rangers box it was hooked over head back into the penalty area, it landed at an unmarked attacker on the right side of the six-yard box, the shot took a slight deflection and went just wide of the far post. Rangers then made the game safe four minutes later, when Grant Nelson was fouled on the edge of the Queen’s penalty area Jamie Barjonas stepped up to shoot over the defensive wall and into the net.

The home side had one final chance with an attack down the right that took them into Rangers penalty area but the shot went just over the crossbar.
