Rangers 3 Airdrie 1

A Rangers side took on Airdrie Under 15’s last night at Murray Park, the game was arranged to allow the coaches a game to assess four trialists from Northern Ireland. It was a decent competitive game with Rangers eventually running out comfortable winners.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark, an attack down the right took them deep into Rangers penalty area, Lewis Muir made a fine save from the initial effort but had no chance as the rebound was fired high into the net. Rangers equalised just over ten minutes later, when Joe McMullan’s corner from the left was headed up in the air by a defender Lewis Mayo rose highest to nod past the keeper.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 Airdrie 1

Airdrie had a chance early in the second half, the attack originated down the left and when the ball was played inside their striker turned inside Rhys Breen but his shot went across goal and wide of the far post. Ten minutes later from a Scott Gray throw in on the left Carlo Pigniatello passed inside to Joe McMullan and his shot from the edge of the box forced a fine save low to his left from the Airdire keeper.

Just after the hour mark Rangers took the lead, Scott Gray sent a free-kick from close to the halfway line on the left into the box, the ball broke off a defender to the Trialist No6 who found the net from around ten yards. As the final fifteen minutes approached two of the trialists combined to carve out a great chance, Trialist No6 passed inside the right back to release Trialist N011 inside the left side of the box but he shot across goal and wide of the far post.

As the game entered the final ten minutes Rhys Breen powered down the left to hit the byline and his cross found Trialist No9 who stooped to head on the edge of the six yard box but it was too straight which allowed the keeper to parry. A few minutes later Rangers made the game safe, Matthew Shiels was the creator with a run down the right that took him past the full-back to the byline from where he cut the ball back to Carlo Pigniatello for a simple finish.
