This weekend’s youth fixtures saw Rangers take on the youth sides from Fife Elite, with the older age groups at home and the younger teams playing in Fife. As is the norm I take in the older age group, so it was the Under 17’s game at Murray Park for me.

A late Jason Krones goal secured Rangers first win over Fife Elite at this age group, having lost both previous meetings earlier this season. It was a game of few chances where the Rangers youngsters had the bulk of the play and probably deserved their narrow win.
Just after the quarter-hour mark Grant Nelson crossed from the right and Aidan Wilson rose to head narrowly wide of Cammy Gill’s right hand post. Five minutes later a long ball from the Fife defence saw Aidan Wilson miscue a header and leave Paul Crossan in the clear and as he broke into the box it took a superb Jason Krones challenge to clear the ball for a corner.
The only other chance of note in the first half came in injury time, from Josh Jeffries corner from the left Cammy Gill dived to his left to gather Jason Krones header at the second attempt.

Rangers continued to have the bulk of possession in the second half but clear-cut chances were again at a premium, Kyle Bradley got the byline on the left ten minutes into the second half, from his cut-back Andy Dallas shot wide of the near post. With the game approaching the final quarter-hour Rangers should have taken the lead from a quick break, a great throw out from Robbie McCrorie sent Lewis White breaking into the opposition’s half, when he was challenged the ball broke for Sam Jamieson who entered the left side of the penalty area where he cut inside a defender but shot across the keeper and wide of the far post.
Rangers finally made the break through with nine minutes remaining, following a set play Ross McCrorie found himself in possession on the left hand byline, a neat piece of skill took him past a defender and his cross was headed past Jack Shaw by Jason Krones from close range. Within a minute a Josh Jeffries flick on setup a chance for Sam Jamieson from the edge of the box but his shot was just wide of Jack Shaw’s right hand post.
There was one further chance deep into injury time, Josh Jeffries cutting in from the left before shooting for goal which Jack Shaw turned wide of his near post.
