Youths Move Up To Second

Hearts 1 Rangers 4

Rangers Under 20’s moved up to second in the table with a comfortable win against a young Hearts side at New Victoria Park, Newtongrange tonight. They are now behind Hibernian on goal difference with two games in hand, with Celtic a further two points behind having played the same number of games. With Rangers and Hearts due to meet in this season’s Youth Cup Final this was looked as a rehearsal in some quarters, but with over age players unavailable and a number of Hearts players presently on first team duty, the teams that lineup for the final will be very different.

Rangers took the lead on fifteen minutes, the Hearts defence failed to clear Ross Perry’s long throw from the right and the ball found its way to the back post where Charlie Telfer fired past Jordan Millar. The Ibrox youngsters doubled their lead just after the half hour, Charlie Telfer’s free-kick from midway inside Hearts half, just right of centre was headed past Jordan Millar by Craig Halkett.

Hearts had shown little in the way of an attacking force in the first half but six minutes before the break they got back into the game, the goal was created on the right and when the ball was passed inside Angus Beith beat Liam Kelly low to his left, when his shot from just outside the box found the bottom corner.

Within in a minute of the second half Rangers restored their two goal lead, Callum Gallagher cut in from the right before going for goal, Jordan Millar dived to his right to parry but was helpless as Craig Halkett knocked the rebound into the net. A few minutes later Callum Gallagher latched on to a slack pass back but as he tried to round the Hearts keeper Jordan Millar made a fine save to divert the ball for a corner.

With twenty minutes remaining Rangers came close again, another Charlie Telfer free-kick, this time near the halfway line on the left found the head of Chris Hegarty and his effort was just wide of Jordan Millar’s right hand post. A fourth goal did come with barely a minute left on the clock, Andy Murdoch attacked the centre of the Hearts defence before releasing Callum Gallagher, Jordan Millar came from his line to make a fine save but the rebound was close enough for Jamie Burrows to stretch and knock the ball into the net.
