Wallsend Boys Club Visit Murray Park

Rangers 2 Wallsend Boys Club 2

Rangers entertained the famous north-east youth side Wallsend Boys Club at Murray Park today. With Rangers starting lineup made up entirely of 2000’s (U14’s) and the Wallsend Boys Club squad almost evenly split between 1999’s (U15’s) and 1998’s (U16’s) it looked likely the Ibrox youngsters would face a still physical challenge.

When Lewis Muir touched a long-range shot on to the crossbar on nine minutes it was the start of a period that initial thoughts predicted, with the Geordie youngsters dominating, They created and missed several chances including two efforts that rebounded from Lewis Muir’s crossbar, culminating in them taking the lead on the half hour. The goal came from a neat turn inside Rangers box creating the space to shoot past Lewis Muir.

Rangers then made a few changes bolstering the side with a few 1999’s (U15’s) players, this allowed them to get a foothold in the game and eventually to an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. Kieran Laing and Andy Dallas combined to send Jack Thomson clear through the middle, he continued into the box before shooting past the keeper.

The game was now more of a contest although the older visiting side still had more of the chances and they edged ahead again ten minutes into the second half, their player powering through three challenges as he burst into the box to shoot past Kieran Wright. Rangers got back on level terms with a goal created by Ben Andoh and Andy Dallas on the left side of the penalty area and when the ball was centred Jack Thomson shot past the keeper.

When a Wallsend player was sent clean through a winner looked the likely outcome until he was denied by a superb Darren Montgomery save low to his right. It was a good test for the younger Rangers side with all available 2000’s and a few 1999’s featuring.

Rangers Squad:- (2000’s) Lewis Muir (Gk), Darren Montgomery (Gk), Jordan Houston, Aaron Reid, Rhys Breen, Jack Thomson, Cammy Wray, Scott Blacklaw, Joe McMullen, Carlo Pignatiello, Stephen Kelly, Matthew Shiels, Lewis Mayo, Matifadza Zata, Michael Hewitt, Scott Gray. (1999’s) Kieran Wright (Gk), Aidan Wilson, Andy Dallas, Ben Andoh, Kieran Laing, Sam Rutherford.

Footnote:- At the same time Rangers 2003’s (U11’s) took on a Wallsend side made up of 2002’s (U12’s) and 2001’s (U13’s). It was the young Rangers side first outing at eleven-a-side and they were comfortable winners by a high score.
