Youth Progress To Semis

Rangers 2 Dunfermline Athletic 0

Rangers Under 20’s progressed to this season’s Youth Cup Semi Finals with a comfortable win over Dunfermline Athletic at Ibrox this afternoon. With the Dunfermline lineup having already recorded over seventy appearances at League One level between them and four players that featured in the recent Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox it looked likely to be a stiff test for the Rangers youngsters.

The early play was in the main a midfield tussle and action in the goalmouths was at a premium. There was twenty-one minutes on the clock when Jamie Burrows switched played to Ryan Sinnamon on the left, the full-back cut inside on to his stronger right foot before going for goal which Cammy Gill saved comfortably low to his left. On the half-hour Dylan Dykes fed Danny Stoney on the left and he cut inside before letting loose with a powerful shot that Cammy Gill saved under his crossbar.

A couple of minutes later Callum Gallagher dispossessed Declan O’Kane on the left side of the Dunfermline area and his effort on goal just cleared the crossbar. As the half entered the final minute Rangers came close to taking the lead on no fewer than three occasions. Charlie Telfer delivered a corner from the left and Luca Gasparotto’s netbound header was headed off the line by Ross Drummond.

Dylan Dykes and Charlie Telfer then combined on the left to move the ball inside to Danny Stoney and his shot from the edge of the box had Cammy Gill diving to his left to turn the ball wide for a corner. When the flag kick was cleared from the penalty area Danny Stoney found himself in possession on the right, his cross caused panic in the visitor’s defence and Declan O’Kane in attempting to clear knocked the ball over Cammy Gill but Ryan Williamson got back to clear before the ball crossed the line.

Dunfermline started the second half brightly and two minutes in Ross Drummond cut inside past Greg Pascazio before going for goal with Liam Kelly saving comfortably to his left. Two minutes later Ross Drummond’s cross from the left saw Ryan Sinnamon miscue a header that allowed Ross Millen to tee up a shot for Finn Graham but his effort was just too high.

As the hour mark approached Craig Halkett’s header from defence sent Jamie Burrows clear, he progressed into the box before shooting, his shot was a bit too straight and Cammy Gill saved. Midway through the half Ryan Sinnamon progressed on the left before passing inside to Charlie Telfer and his daisy cutter from a round twenty yards brought out a fine save from Cammy Gill low to his left to divert the ball for a corner.

From that corner Rangers took the lead, Charlie Telfer delivered from the right and Craig Halkett’s header was bound for the top corner until Ryan Williamson popped up to head clear, with the Dunfermline defence struggling to clear, Greg Pascazio knocked the ball forward for Jamie Burrows to spin and fire past the keeper from the edge of the six-yard box. As the game entered the final quarter of an hour the visitor’s tried to respond, an enterprising run down the right from Ryan Williamson took him into the Rangers penalty area but his low driven cross come shot flashed a cross goal.

Rangers were soon back on attack and from another Charlie Telfer corner from the right was again met by the head of Craig Halkett and on this occasion it was powerful enough but straight at Cammy Gill. Rangers then made the tie safe in the final minute, Craig Halkett’s header forward should have been intercepted by Finn Graham but when he failed to gather Ryan Hardie was left in the clear to continue into the box and slot the ball past Cammy Gill.
