13’s Overcome Saints Resistance

St.Mirren 0 Rangers 4

The only youth game of the day saw Rangers under 13’s take on St.Mirren at the Paisley club’s Ralston Training Ground. The Rangers youngsters dominated but were finding the breakthrough difficult against a stubborn home side and it was the third period before the opening goal came.

Rangers first opportunity came when Adedapo Mebude passed the ball across the edge of the penalty area to Niyah Joseph on the left side of the box and his shot beat the keeper but bounced clear off the keeper’s right hand post. The woodwork again came to the home side’s rescue in Rangers next significant attack, Nathan Patterson made his way to the byline on the right and his cut back found Billy Gilmour who’s shot came back off the keeper’s left hand post.

Lewis McGrattan then slipped a pass through the centre of the Saint’s defence with the keeper rushing from his line to save bravely at Adedapo Mebude’s feet.  Rangers continued their dominance at the start of the second period and when the ball broke for Billy Gilmour at the edge of the box and his shot crashed off the keeper’s left hand post with the keeper beaten.

Despite Rangers domination the home side missed a great chance to take the lead, capitalising on a poor clearance they broke into the left side of Rangers penalty area but the shot could only find the side netting. Rangers were soon back on attack and when Dylan Patterson progressed through the inside left channel before exchanging passes with Niyah Joseph and forcing the St.Mirren keeper to save low to his left.

Before the end of the second period the ball was played up to Niyah Joseph at the edge of the box, as he tried to bring the ball under control it broke to Billy Gilmour who again beat the keeper but this time it was the crossbar to the home side’s rescue. At the start of the third period Zac Butterworth progressed on the left before finding Lewis McGrattan at the edge of the box and the Saints keeper did well to tip his shot over.

Rangers eventually made the break through a few minutes later, Dylan Patterson’s cross from the right hand angle of the box appeared to be missed by defenders and attackers alike as the ball found the bottom corner. Andy Rodden then played the ball forward to Zac Butterworth on the left who cut inside before shooting a cross goal and wide of the far post.

Rangers then doubled their lead when Andy Rodden broke forward from full-back and gave the keeper no chance from fully twenty-five yards. A Billy Gilmour pass then sent Zac Butterworth free  and he exchanged passes with Dylan Patterson before forcing a fine save from the keeper, Dylan Patterson’s shot from the rebound was destined for the net until it was somehow deflected over by a Saints defender. Andy Rodden swung over the resultant corner from the right and Ben Williamson found the space to head past the keeper.

The scoring was completed when a fine passing move saw the ball move from Nathan Patterson through Niyah Joseph and Billy Gilmour to Zac Butterworth inside the left side of the penalty area and he shot across the keeper into the far corner.
