Youths Safely Through

Queen’s Park 0 Rangers 4

Rangers youths safely negotiated their passage to the next round of the youth cup with a comfortable win over Queen’s Park at Lesser Hampden this afternoon. The home side were still in the game until Rangers second goal after seventy minutes, Rangers then pulled away and could have added another couple of goals.

The first half was a fairly even midfield contest with little goalmouth action and more than half an hour had passed when Darren Ramsay’s crossfield path found Tom Walsh on the left, the midfielder cut inside before firing a shot narrowly over. A couple of minutes later the home side came close to taking the lead, from a corner on the left the  ball was headed goalwards with Tom Walsh clearing from the goal line at the back post.

Five minutes before the break Rangers took the lead, Darren Ramsay sent in a free-kick from the left which looked likely to be gathered by the home keeper he appeared to clash with his own defender before losing his grip on the ball giving Luca Gasparotto the simple task of rolling the ball into the empty net. The visitors came close to doubling their lead before the half-time whistle, a quick break following a Queen’s Park corner saw the ball move from Darren Ramsay to Charlie Telfer, his pass played Andy Murdoch through with the home keeper making a fine save.

The home side were still in the game but it was Rangers who were looking more likely to find the net, just over ten minutes of the half had elapsed when Darren Ramsay collected Andy Murdoch’s pass close to the byline on the right. He cut inside past two defenders before forcing a fine save from the Queen’s keeper low to his left. Just past the midway point of the second-half Rangers doubled their lead, when the ball was played forward into the box substitute Craig Halkett controlled it on his chest bust was crowded out before he could get a shot away but the ball broke for Callum Gallagher to shoot low past the keeper.

Rangers continued to press forward and when Craig Halkett laid the ball out to Darren Ramsay on the left he cut inside before firing just wide of the keeper’s left hand post. As the game entered the final six minutes Rangers grabbed a third, Darren Ramsay was the creator with some good play on the left before passing inside to Jamie Burrows who side-stepped a defender before beating the keeper from the edge of the box.

A ball over the top of the Queen’s park defence seemed certain to produce a fourth as Craig Halkett was one-on-one with the keeper, as the striker tried to pick his spot he was denied by a fine save. He was to get his goal in injury time, Andy Murdoch made his was to the byline on the left and his pass across goal allowed Craig Halkett to net from a couple of yards.
