13’s Beat Dundee United

Rangers 4 Dundee United 2

With the development leagues still having a few weeks to run what better way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon than taking in a game. Rangers under 13’s played hosts to their Dundee United counterparts at Murray Park this afternoon and with a few of the squad in Italy with the under 14’s it saw a promotion from the under 12 squad for Lewis Muir, Stephen Kelly, Jack Thomson and Aaron Muir who joined Jordan Houston, another under 12, who has played up a year all the season.

Rangers took the lead after thirteen minutes, Jordan Houston skinned the full-back on the right and sent a great pass into the box to Grant Nelson who picked his spot past the keeper. Five minutes later Jack Sherrie sent in a cross from the left that Stephen Kelly brought under control inside the box and was only denied by a fine save from the United keeper.

The visitor’s keeper was in action again a couple of minutes later to parry Liam Burt’s acrobatic volley after Grant Nelson found him with a cross from the right hand byline. In Rangers next attack they increased their lead, Lewis Ferguson’s pass from the right hand side of the box found Liam Burt who side stepped the keeper before firing into the net.

Five minutes before the break Dundee United, who had shown little in an attacking sense came close twice in as many minutes, following an attack down the left Rangers struggled to clear and when a shot was fired goalwards Ewan McMillan came to the rescue clearing from the line. Less than sixty minutes later from inside the box the United player knocked the ball over Lewis Muir only to see it strike the crossbar. Rangers ended the period on the attack and after good play on the right hand byline from Stephen Kelly, Liam Burt knocked is low ball across the six-yard box narrowly over.

Just over five minutes of the second period had gone when United pulled a goal back, a cross filed pass out the left setup the chance and the shot across Lewis Muir found the net via the post. Rangers replied when Jack ????? got the byline and his cross was cleared to the edge of the box Liam Burt was only just wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

The two goal lead was restored when Liam Burt sent the ball out to Jordan Houston on the right, his cross had the United defence under pressure and when the ball broke to Jack ????? he shot past the keeper from close range. The visitors replied with a threatening attack down the left and when the low cross came into the box the attacker touched it just wide.

A flowing move a few minutes before the end of the second period almost produced a fourth, the ball was moved through midfield from Lewis Ferguson via Ross Brown and Liam Burt out to Jordan Houston on the right, his crosses were a constant threat to the United defence and on this occasion he found the head of Jack ????? but the effort was too straight and the keeper saved.

As the game entered the final twenty-five minutes Rangers scored again, Ross Brown’s pass split the defence and sent Jack ????? clear to carry on into the box before shooting past the keeper. United replied when a header from a corner from the right was only just too high.

A carbon copy of the move that produced the fourth almost lead to a fifth, Ross Brown’s pass sending Jack ????? racing into the box but on this occasion he was denied by a superb challenge from the United central defender. A good passing move then created a chance for the visitor’s on the left hand angle of the box and Lewis Muir was forced to make a fine save diving to his right.

The visitor’s did get their second goal with a couple of minutes remaining, when the ball was lobbed over the Rangers defence a goal seemed certain until Lewis Muir produced a point-blank save but the Rangers keeper was helpless as the United player netted the rebound. The game ended with Rangers on the attack, another Jordan Houston cross was the source this time finding its way to Aaron Reid at the back post and his effort from a tight angle forced the United keeper to make a save.
