Rangers 3 Motherwell 0
A few days away meant I had to wait until Sunday to take in a youth game. Three goals in the final thirty minute period secured a win for Rangers Under 13’s against Motherwell at Murray Park this afternoon.
The first chance came after Wallace Duffy won possession and passed on to Sam Johnstone who set up a chance for Jack Sherrie from inside the left hand side of the penalty area but he shot across goal and wide of the far post. A similar effort, this time from the other side of the box from Liam Burt was wide of the right hand post after he was played in by Ross Brown.
Rangers came closer still, Lewis Ferguson won the ball on halfway and played it forward to Liam Burt, a neat side step took him past a defender before releasing Jordan Houston on the right side of the box with the Motherwell keeper coming off his line to make a fine save.
Motherwell had a chance at the beginning of the second period, when the initial shot was blocked the rebound was just wide of Kieran Wright’s right hand post. At the other end only a brilliant save prevented Rangers taking the lead, Lewis Ferguson sent Jordan Houston clear on the right and when Sam Johnstone fired his cutback goalwards a goal looked certain until the ‘Well keeper got a touch to divert the ball on to the bar.
From a Kyle McAllister corner on the left the home side missed a great chance, Wallace Duffy’s header landed at Sam Johnstone close to the back post but his shot flashed across goal and wide of the keeper’s right hand post. A minute later Motherwell replied when a free-kick on the left was played inside and the shot from distance was wide of Kieran Wright’s right hand post.
Kyle McAllister then cut in from the left before setting up a shooting chance for Sam Johnstone which was just wide of the keeper’s left hand post. It was another attack on the left this time Motherwell and Kieran Wright did well to palm away a dangerous cross.
Seven minutes into the final period Rangers took the lead with a brilliant individual goal from Stephen Kelly, collecting a throw in from Euan McMillan on the left, he nutmegged a defender and continued into the box and beat the keeper from a narrow angle. Three minutes later Rangers doubled their lead, when the keeper failed to gather a Kyle McAllister free-kick from the right Aiden Wilson was well placed to prod the ball over the line.
The third goal came after the change round, from a short corner on the left Jack Sherrie scored with a close range header from Lewis Ferguson’s cross. A double save in the closing minutes from Kieran Wright denied Motherwell a consolation goal, diving to his right he parried the initial shot from the right hand side of the box, in the ensuing scramble the visitor’s had a decent shout for a penalty before Kieran Wright produced another fine save from a close range shot.
