17’s Hammer Jags In Glasgow Cup

Rangers 12 Partick Thistle 1

Tonight’s Glasgow Cup Section game was a one-sided affair with Rangers running up a high score at Murray Park. Barely sixty-seconds had passed when a superb turn from Tom Walsh on the left hand byline set up an easy opener for Danny Stoney from close range. On five minutes Fraser Aird played a one-two with Danny Stoney at the edge of the box and it took a combination of goalkeeper and defender to divert the ball wide for a corner.

Rangers doubled their lead on eighteen minutes, Darren Ramsay’s corner from the right broke to Greg Pascazio just inside the box and despite the best efforts of keeper Marc Watters his shot found the corner of the net via the keeper and his left hand post. Two minutes later the ball was played out to Charlie Telfer on the right, he went outside the defender and shot across the keeper into the bottom corner.

Only a further two minutes had passed and keeper Watters was picking the ball out the net again, this time a wicked deflection on Darren Ramsay’s 25 yarder left him helpless. With just less than ten minutes to the break Rangers scored again, Andy Murdoch passed inside to Charlie Telfer and his pass set Jamie Burrows free inside the box to beat the keeper.

Five minutes later Rangers completed the first half scoring, Darren Ramsay lobbing the ball over the defence for Danny Stoney to volley past keeper Watters.

Half-Time:- Rangers 6 Partick Thistle 0

Rangers started the second half  just like the first and scored in the opening minute, the Thistle defence should have dealt with Dylan Dykes low cross but allowed the ball to reach Fraser Aird at the back post to net the seventh. A minute later Jordan Wilson’s run and cross on the left found Scott Roberts who headed into the net at the back post.

On the hour mark Rangers scored again, Charlie Telfer sent the ball to Jamie Burrows on the left and the striker cut inside past the defender into the box and finished with a fine shot. Two minutes later only a brilliant double save from Liam Kelly prevented a reply from the visitors, from a break through the middle the Rangers keeper dived to save high to his left and was then back on his feet to divert the rebound onto the bar and gathered the loose ball.

Thistle were not to be denied their consolation and three minutes later and a superb strike from Gerry O’Donnell from the left hand angle of the box found the net via Kelly’s left hand post. Rangers were soon back on the attack and Fraser Aird’s solo run took him past three defenders, from his pass inside  Scott Roberts laid it off to Charlie Telfer and his effort came back off the cross-bar with the keeper beaten.

With just over twenty minutes remaining Jamie Burrows burst into the box on the left past two defenders, with his ball across the six yard box destined for Dylan Dykes it was knocked past the keeper by a Thistle defender for an Own Goal. The start of Rangers next goal began from a Thistle corner, when the ball was cleared from the box a lightning break saw Jamie Burrows power towards the Thistle box before feeding the supporting Jordan Wilson, his effort was parried by keeper Watters but only into the path of Dylan Dykes who had the simple task of rolling the ball into the empty net.

A minute later and Jamie Burrows was the creator breaking towards the byline inside the box on the left before cutting the ball back for Darren Ramsay to net from close  range. A solo run from Fraser Aird in the final minutes took him to the edge of the box,  when his effort struck the arm of a Thistle defender the award of a penalty was unnecessary, perhaps the supervisors were watching. Andy Murdoch stepped up to take the kick with keeper Watters diving to his left to save.

That completed the romp for the home side, but with Fraser Aird and Darren Ramsay now pretty much established in the 19’s side I fail to see the point or the benefit of recalling them to the 17’s for tonight’s game when a couple of younger players could have played the ninety minutes.
