Dominant 17’s Lose To Only Goal

September 22, 2011

Celtic 1 Rangers 0

Rangers under 17’s will be wondering how they failed to take something from their opening Glasgow Cup section match against Celtic at Lennoxtown tonight. A missed penalty and failure to turn almost total domination in the second half against ten man Celtic into goals proved costly.

Rangers created the first chance after five minutes, Stuart Urquhart played the ball out to Jordan Wilson on the left and when his cross found Danny Stoney inside the box the Rangers striker slipped at the vital moment and his effort was weak which Jordan Hart saved easily. Five minutes later Andy Murdoch came to Rangers rescue, when Luca Gasparotto missed a header Paul McMullen was through on goal he lobbed the ball over the advancing Liam Kelly with the Rangers full-back clearing from in front of an empty net.

Rangers went straight to the other end and Darren Ramsay played Stoney through, keeper Hart parried the striker’s effort from a tight angle wide for a corner.¬† Hart was again in action seven minutes later this time parrying Fraser Aird’s shot after the midfielder broke forward from midfield.

On the half-hour mark Rangers had a great opportunity to take the lead, Ramsay played the ball to Stoney inside the box his superb turn opened up space and just as he was about to pull the trigger he was brought down by Stuart Findlay for a clear penalty and certain red card for the Celtic central defender. Fraser Aird stepped up to take the kick but keeper Jordan Hart produced a great save diving to his right. Four Minutes later the home side came close when a corner from the right was headed wide of Kelly’s left hand post.

On 36 minutes Rangers fell behind, with little danger Fraser Aird lost possession just outside his own penalty area and Paul McMullen broke into the box to shoot past Kelly.

Three minutes into the second half Rangers were denied by the woodwork, Aird’s cross from the right found its way to Darren McGill on the left hand side of the box and his effort from a narrow angle was parried onto the crossbar by keeper Hart. Four minutes later it was the post that rescued the home side, Aird’s free-kick broke to Luca Gasparotto¬† his volley hit Hart’s left hand post before rolling along the goal line into the keeper’s arms.

With keeper Liam Kelly now a virtual spectator Rangers continued to press forward and when the ball was cleared to the edge of the box Andy Murdoch’s improvised effort was held under the crossbar by Hart. With twenty minutes remaining Rangers had strong penalty claims when Wilson appeared to be pushed as he was about to get his head to an Aird cross but the referee waved play on.

Rangers thought they had grabbed the equaliser they deserved on 83 minutes when Craig Halkett rose to head Ramsay’s cross from the right into the net but the lineman flagged for offside. That was to prove to be the last chance and Celtic defended to hold out and claim the points.
