Saints Grab Late Winner

St.Mirren 2 Rangers 1

A goal in the final minute inflicted the second league defeat in a row for the Youth side at McKenna Park yesterday. It was also the second game where they failed to hold on to a half-time lead.

The game got off to a slow start and it wasn’t until the twentieth minute when we saw the first attempt at goal, Josh Horne breaking forward from full-back and shooting past the far post. Three minutes later Joel Kasabundi broke down the right and pass inside saw Craig Slater turn and shoot wide.

Five minutes later Rangers had their first shot at goal when Robbie Crawford passed inside to Adam Hunter who’s shot from 25 yards went wide. Just before the half-hour the home side had a chance from a free-kick just outside the box, Graeme Ramage powerful shot was parried by Wayne Drummond.  On 33 minutes it was a free-kick at the other end which Kal Naismith fired wide from 25 yards.

Seven minutes before the break Rangers were gifted the lead, Dominic Kennedy’s pass back was mis-controlled by keeper Adam McHugh and Rhys McCabe had the simple task to roll the ball home. Just before the break Andy Mitchell was fouled just outside the box and McHugh dived to his right to divert Naismith’s effort from the free-kick for a corner.

Half Time:- St.Mirren 0 Rangers 1

The home side came close to equalising  straight after the break, Ramage’s corner from the right broke to Jason Naismith inside the box and his shot came back of Drummond’s left hand post. Rangers replied when Naismith got a flick on to a Drummond clearance and McCabe’s shot was just too high.

Just before the hour good work on the left by Mark Lamont saw Bradley Coyne beat Drmmond to his cross and head narrowly over. The homes side grabbed an equalizer on 67 minutes, Mark Lamont cutting in from the right and shooting past Drummond from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes later a superb block from McHugh prevented Rangers regaining their lead, good work on the right hand byline by Sam McMahon and a great cross on to the head of Naismith looked certain to produce a goal until McHugh blocked with his legs at point-blank range. Rangers were to rue that miss in the final minute, Coyne robbed Kamil Wiktorski near the corner flag on the left and passed inside to Tom Reilly, who fed Graeme Ramage inside the box and he sidestepped a defender to shoot past Drummond.
