Youths Lose Friendly

Rangers 0 Queen Of The South 2

A double from the experienced Sean O’Connor was enough to defeat a Rangers youth side at Murray Park this morning. The game was arranged to provide game time to the under 19 squad who have not been playing recently. A few players were returning from injury and a couple of under 17’s started.

The first real chance came after quarter of an hour and it saw the visitor’s trialist keeper scoop an Anthony Marenghi shot from the edge of the box round the post for a corner. Five minutes later and a great Andy Mitchell challenge diverted Sean O’Connor’s effort from the eighteen yard line. Almost immediately Daniel Orsi cut in from the right past two defenders, his pass into the box gave Steve Degnan a chance but his shot went just wide.

Just after the half-hour Robbie Crawford cut in from the left and passed to Christiano Kisuka with the Queen’s keeper saving his effort diving to his left. A minute Lewis McLeod tried his luck cutting in from the right, his shot just wide of the mark. A couple on minutes before the break Alan Smith had a decent save from Ian McShane’s shot from just outside the penalty area.

Four minutes after the break a clearance from the keeper was missed by the Rangers defence and Steve Degnan was clean through, only a fine block from Smith denied him. Two minutes later and O’Connor got a flick on to release Degnan, Ryan Smillie looked certain to score from his cutback but a superb challenge by Adam Hunter saved the day. From the resultant corner Sean O’Connor powered his header goalwards  with Robbie Crawford popping up on the goal line to clear.

On 64 minutes Crawford’s shot from the edge of the box and looped up off a defender with the Queen’s keeper looking  under pressure he managed to keep the ball out. From his clearance the substitute No 5, played in Sean O’Connor who shot past Smith.

Five minute later and it was 2-0, a ball in from the left was helped on by Ryan Smillie to Sean O’Connor who beat Smith for a second time. Before time-up Michael Noble had a long range effort just over and Andy Mitchell had the ball in the net, but was just offside.
