16’s Draw At Motherwell

Motherwell 0 Rangers 0

Rangers under 16’s were held in an entertaining goalless draw at Dalziel Park tonight. It was a continuation of midweek friendlies to provide game time for first year under 17’s and an opportunity to promote some of the under 15’s.

It was the home side that had the better of the early exchanges and in the fifth minute Sam George had to dive to his left to save a 25 yard effort from the Motherwell midfielder. He surpassed that a minute later when Greg Pascazio missed a long ball it left the home striker in the clear, but Sam George came off his line to make a fine save with his leg.

A couple of minutes later and Rangers created their first opportunity, Charlie Telfer and Paul Kane combined on the right and when the later cut the ball back the home keeper dived to his left to save Telfer’s shot. Motherwell again came close on ten minutes, a break down the left saw a great challenge from Darren McGill to clear when the cross came in, but the ball broke to the edge of the box an the Motherwell player shot wide.

On 24 minutes only a stunning save prevented Rangers taking the lead, a Tom Walsh corner from the left saw Greg Pacazio’s looping header come back off the crossbar, Stuart Urquhart’s header from the rebound looked a certain goal but the Motherwell keeper diving to his left somehow got a touch to divert the ball on to the crossbar. A minute before the break  the home side threatened when a shot from the left hand angle of the box went across goal and wide.

Half-Time:- Motherwell 0 Rangers 0

Five minutes after the break the Rangers defence failed to clear and only a great save from George diving to his left kept the score sheet blank. Just before the hour mark Paul Kane was pulled back when breaking towards the penalty box and Urquhart fired the free-kick narrowly over.

On 70 minutes Rangers almost took the lead in bizarre circumstances, Robert McLardie charged down the home keeper’s clearance and the ball only just cleared the crossbar for a goal-kick. Ten minutes later and  a fine driving run from midfield by Darren McGill set up Charlie Telfer, as he advanced into the box the ‘Well keeper came off his line to block.

Straight up the other end and the home side broke into the box from the left, substitute keeper Scott Macauley blocked and the Motherwell striker’s effort from the rebound came back off the bar.  In the final minute Paul Kane came close, cutting in from the right and shooting just wide. The home side had the final chance deep into injury time, shooting wide after a break down the right.
