Craigroyston Hit For Six

August 6, 2010

Rangers 6 Craigroyston 0

Rangers Under 17’s, with three from the 19’s squad took on Edinburgh side Craigroyston’s Under 19’s and Murray Park tonight and ran out comfortable winners.

The first chance of the came in seven minutes, a great Frankie Owens cross from the left was headed just wide by Cristiano Kisuka. Three minutes later Rangers took the lead from a fantastic strike from Stuart Urquhart, from fully thirty yards the ball skidded of the wet surface and into the bottom corner.

Anthony Marenghi then had a shot cleared of the line, the chance created by a great overlapping run from Nicky Main and his cross finding Marenghi at the back post. Just after the midway point in the first-half the visitors broke down the right and it ended with a comfortable save from Blair Currie.

A minute later Christiano Kisuka cut in from the right and forced a fine save from the keeper low at his left hand post. Approaching the half-hour mark the keeper was in action again, saving a Marenghi free-kick from the right hand angle of the box.

The Craigroyston keeper was the barrier between Rangers and a second goal, his next save was a brave dive at the feet of Sam McMahon after he was played in by  Marenghi. This was quickly followed by another two saves from the same Rangers player. First from a narrow angle  to concede a corner and this was surpassed when from the resultant flag kick the ball broke to McMahon on the edge of the six yard box, he poked it goalwards and the keeper produced a brilliant save low to his left.

On 36 minutes he denied Sam McMahon again, Scott Rumsby sent him clear, the keeper blocked his effort, but could only knock it into the path of Lee Cochrane for a simple tap in. Two minutes later and the Craigroyston keeper continued his personal battle with McMahon, the big striker latched on to Frankie Owens ball into the box but the keeper diverted his shot wide.

With five minutes of the half remaining Gregor Fotheringham sent Cochrane through, he tried to lob the on rushing keeper, but it didn’t quite have the height and the keeper saved. But he was exposed a minute later, a great run along the byline from Kisuka, his cutback was cleared to the edge of the box where Gregor Fotheringham was on hand to net Rangers third with a fine strike.

Half-Time:- Rangers 3 Craigroyston 0

Seven minutes into the second half and McMahon was out of luck again, he went through and this time rounded the keeper (a half-time sub, not the same one) and it looked a certain goal but an incredible goal-line clearance from the Craigroyston defender diverted the ball over the bar. The fourth goal was only delayed three minutes and  it was a great solo effort from Anthony Marenghi, he went past two defenders cutting in from the right and shot past the keeper from just inside the box.

Two minutes later he almost scored again from another great run, this time shooting just wide. Just after the hour it was George Scott’s turn to try his luck with a great shot from around 25 yards that the keeper tipped over. A minute later the impressive substitute trialist No 15 won the ball thirty yards out, carried on into the box and setup Mark Taylor who shot just over.

Frankie Owens was the  architect of Rangers fifth goal, his run down the left took him past several defenders and his cross was met by the head of Trialist No 15 who nodded past the keeper.

The keeper then produced a great save, touching Mark Taylor’s drive form the edge of the box on to the bar, after good work by Owens. Taylor then played in the Trialist N0 15, as the keeper came out he unselfishly squared the ball to Callum Wylie for a simple tap in. The final chance came with five minutes left on the clock when Taylor’s good run and shot brought out a fine save from the keeper.
