Glenavon Visit Murray Park

Two youth teams from Lurgan’s Glenavon FC visited Murray Park yesterday. The pitches used meant I could only take in one game and had to make a choice, I decided to take in the game involving the older lads.

Rangers 2 Glenavon 2

A Rangers under 15 squad supplemented with three under 16 players took on Glenavon’s Under 16’s, in what was an entertaining game played over three thirty minute periods. The first chance of the game came on six minutes when a one-two at the halfway line between Danny Stoney and Luke Hammond sent the former clear, he advanced into the box and the Glenavon keeper blocked his shot with his legs.

The Northern Irish side took the lead on ten minutes, the Rangers defence failed to clear and the ball broke to the Glenavon striker inside the box and he shot past Liam Kelly. Things got worse for the Rangers youngsters on 23 minutes when a cross from the left deceived everyone and ended up in the back of the net.

Rangers pulled a goal back three minutes into the second period, when the Glenavon keeper failed to gather a Kjeld McIntyre corner from the left Gloady Ntumba was on hand to knock the ball over the line. Five minutes later and a break down the left gave a chance to the visitors which Kelly saved.

Rangers were back on level terms after 48 minutes, Luke Hammond shot from around 25 yards and it went in off the keeper’s right hand post. A minute later when Hammond played in Ntumba the keeper blocked with his legs.

With ten minutes of the period remaining Rangers were denied by the woodwork, a Lewis Morgan corner was headed out, where Johnny Bradley met it on the volley, with the keeper beaten it came back off his right hand post. Glenavon then had a great chance following a fine passing move, the ball eventually coming in from the right, it was controlled by the midfielder who had made a great run into the box, he tried to poke it past Kelly but the Rangers keeper saved.

The Ibrox youngsters were then denied when Hammond set up Craig Halkett who knocked it past the advancing keeper, as the ball rolled towards the empty net a defender got back to clear from the line.  The first chance of the final period saw Kelly make a fine save from a free-kick from just outside the box and only a great challenge from Ciaran Summers prevented a certain goal from the rebound.

Rangers then had a couple of efforts before the end, good play on the right by Ntumba, his cross was controlled by the trialist N0. 16, who’s shot was saved low down at the post. Then with four minutes remaining a good run and shot from Hammond was saved by the keeper.
