Youths Bounce Back

Hibernian 0 Rangers 2

Rangers under 19’s got back to winning ways against Hibs at the Hibs Training Centre this afternoon. Billy Kirkwood welcomed back Gregg Wylde and Archie Campbell from suspension against a young Hibs side who were possibly looking ahead to next season.

Both sides struggled to handle the blustery conditions and the early play produced little of note. With the home side creating the first real opportunity on 19 minutes when Harry Monaghan set up Danny Handling who’s effort brought out a fine save from Grant Adam low to his left. From Scott Smith’s resultant corner David Crawford headed narrowly over.

Ten minutes later and a wind assisted long-range attempt from Rhys McCabe saw keeper Paul Grant gather at the second attempt. On 32 minutes Rangers took the lead from the penalty spot. A cross from Scott Durie on the right found its way to Max Wright inside the box, he turned and shot and his effort was adjudged to have been handled by the Hibs defender and the referee pointed to the spot. Archie Campbell stepped up to confidently beat Grant from 12 yards.

This seemed to give the Rangers youngsters a boost in confidence and they came close to increasing their lead. Ten minutes before the break Dylan McGeough and Rhys McCabe combined to set up Campbell at the edge of the box, his shot brought out a fine save from Grant. Two minutes later and the home keeper again excelled when McCabe’s cross from the left was headed towards the top corner by Max Wright, Grant diving high to his right clawed it away for a corner.

Rangers almost doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half, Max Wright sending Campbell bursting into the box, keeper Grant blocked his effort and as it spun towards the goal Mark Lancaster was on hand to clear. A few minutes later Hibs had a chance from the edge of the box but Dean Horribine shot just wide.

Ten minutes in and Scott Smith’s free kick looked to be comfortable for Adam, but he elected to punch, which caused a moment of panic before being cleared. The home side with the wind at their backs were having their best spell and Phil Addison created a chance for himself cutting in from the left and forced a save from Adam.

Rangers seemed to be coping better playing into the wind and substitute Kal Naismith set up Campbell but his shot lacked power and was easily saved by Grant. On 72 minutes Hibs had what was probably their best chance of the match, Addison lobbed the ball in to the box from the left where Crawford produced a great piece os skill to bring the ball under control only to shoot tamely at Adam.

With just under ten minutes remaining Rangers made the game safe. Gregg Wylde swung in a free kick from out on the left and Kyle Hutton sent a header looping over Grant and into the net.  Right at the end Hibs had a free-kick which was cleared to Campbell at the edge of his own box, the Rangers striker then ran the length of the park before bringing out a fine save from keeper Grant.
