Gers Ease In To Glasgow Cup Final

Clyde 1 Rangers 6

Rangers Under 17’s eased past Clyde to reach the Glasgow Cup Final at Broadwood tonight. Only the woodwork and a fine performance by Clyde keeper Chris Tennent prevented the score line being even more emphatic.

Right from the first minute when Ewan McNeil cut inside and tested Chris Tennent who tipped his effort round the post, the Rangers youngsters were in command. Indeed only three minutes later they had taken the lead, Ewan McNeil went passed the full back on the right and his low cross was turned in to the net at the back post by Kyle McAusland.

Two minutes later and Rangers had doubled their lead, again it was created on the right, this time full back Adam Hunter provided the cross for Anthony Marenghi to net from close range. Five minutes later McAusland sent Hunter clear on the right and Lee Cochrane seemed certain to score from his cross but screwed his shot wide.

On the quarter-hour mark Cochrane beat the Clyde defence in the air to win Kamil Wiktorski’s forward ball and send himself clear, but he didn’t execute his attempted chip properly and Tennent saved comfortably. Clyde went straight up the other end to create their first chance when Jack Attwood won the ball and slipped in Chris Ferguson who’s effort was comfortably saved by Blair Currie.

Rangers then came close twice in as many minutes midway through the half. Dylan McGeough fed McNeil wide on the right and he cut inside and tested keeper Tennent who tipped the ball round the post for a corner. Then Michael Noble’s cross from the left found Lee Cochrane who’s effort hit the post and rolled across goal and clear.

Just after the half-hour mark Clyde were handed a route back into the game, when the Rangers defence failed to clear the ball fell to Chris Ferguson who’s shot was adjudged to have been handled by Wiktorski and the same player beat Blair Currie from the spot. Rangers response was to hit the woodwork twice before the break. An Anthony Marenghi free kick was headed back across goal by Wiktorski, where Cochrane headed against the post from close range. Then Marenghi played the ball into McAusland at the edge of the box who turned and sent his shot on to the bar and over.

Clyde’s Ross MacKinnon had the final effort of the half which was saved by Currie, although it was probably going just wide.

Half Time :- Clyde 1 Rangers 2

Rangers increased their lead in the first minute after the break, Noble and Marenghi combined on the left and Lee Cochrane collected the cross around the penalty spot to shoot past Tennent. A minute later and McGeough sent Marenghi clean through, just when it looked like a fourth goal he shot past.

On 52 minutes Clyde had a great chance to reduce the deficit, when Scott Breddy’s cross broke to Ferguson inside the box, but Scott Rumsby made a great block. Rangers went back on the attack and McGeough drove forward from midfield to release McAusland on the right and his cross come shot flashed across goal with Cochrane just failing to connect at the back post.

A minute later and McGeough’s free-kick from the left hand side of the box hit the outside of Tennent’s left hand post with the keeper beaten. The home keeper then denied Cochrane, tipping over his attempted lob when he was sent clear. He then bettered that with a fine diving save to deny the same player only a minute later.

Tennent then had further saves in quick succession, saving McAusland’s header from a Marenghi cross low to his left. Then coming rushing from his line to block from the same player when he was sent clear by McGeough’s pass.

He was helpless on 63 minutes when Kyle McAusland ran through on to Adam Hunter’s long pass to net Rangers fourth. Two minutes later the home keeper again excelled, Steven Hetherington broke from the halfway line and found Ewan McNeil coming in from the right, Tennent denying the Rangers wide man blocking with his legs.

A minute later Rangers scored the best goal of the game. A great piece of skill by Hunter brought the ball under control out on the right, he passed the ball down the line to McNeil, who’s’ pass inside was gathered by Dylan McGeough breaking into the box to fire past Tennent.

On 73 minutes Tennent again advanced from his line to prevent a goal,  this time it was Cochrane clear on to a Hunter pass. A minute later and the scoring was complete, substitute George Scott’s first touch of the match sending Anthony Marenghi clear to beat the advancing Tennent.

To Clyde credit they never gave up and threatened to pull a goal back near the end. Breddy played the ball in from the right and Ferguson shot across goal and wide of the far post. In the final minute MacKinnon’s free-kick forced Currie to tip over.
